paranoid mom question :)

We have a traditional bumper on B's crib. We figured while he is not mobile, it would be fine and we would determine if we should remove it when he can roll when that time comes. Well imagine my surprise last night when I looked at him on the video monitor and he had wiggled his way from the center of the crib to the side, and his face was about an inch and a half from the bumper! I got up and shifted him back, and then basically stayed awake for the next hour and a half checking on him constantly to make sure he was ok. Of course he was fine.

DH thinks I'm being paranoid. Part of me thinks we should take the bumper off and replace it with a mesh breathable bumper - something I never heard of, and would never have really thought about as a concern if it weren't for the bump.

What do YOU think? :)

Re: paranoid mom question :)

  • Personally, I am a super paranoid mom when it comes to sleeping situations and SIDS. We only used breathable bumpers with both kids. I say switch it - so much better safe than sorry.

for what it's worth - sleep safety, gates for stairs, and carseat safety are super important to me. What you choose to feed your child, bedtime, etc., those are choices. But sleep safety is so important.

  • I'd take them off so you can have some peace of mind. Babies can be quite squirmy and he could get himself in that position again and you'll have to take them off eventually, right?!

Although, Liza still sleeps in bed with us so listen to mommies that have thier babies in cribs over me :) lol

  • We have the breathable bumper.  We switched DS's regular bumper tot he breathable one when he started to get mobile in the crib I think - not sure if there was a specific example like you described?  DD often lodges herself right in the crib corners, so I'm glad we have it and I actually kinda like they way it looks.  :)
  • We never used the regular bumpers or the mesh ones until Logan started getting her feet caught between the bars. I just felt better knowing that there wasn't anything in her crib.

That being said we only used the mesh bumpers for about 4 months because she start pulling on them and playing with them so now there is nothing in her crib.

I think you can get them relatively cheap at Burlington Coat factory. Thats where we picked ours up at.

  • I had the intent of removing the bumpers, but have left them in there b/c my kid is so active she was bruising her head all up moving around at night and then waking herself up crying when she knocked into the rail - so I've left them in. She tends to wedge herself up in a corner like pp said as well.  The first few nights I would panic and go in and check to make sure she was breathing and had room to breath.  After a week or so of that, I kind of realized that she's going to move if she can't breath - but she's older than yours as well.

I like Sarah did co-sleeping and we only transitioned her to starting to sleep in her crib when she was 7 months.  She sleeps in the crib until she wakes up at 3 am or 4 am and then I bring her to bed with us to finish the night.  I know I know, it's horrible and I'm going to have it horrible later on, but it's worked for us and I kind of didn't want to give up co-sleeping completely, but still wanted some alone time with DH in our bed, so it works for us at the moment.

Otherwise, I probably would have removed them completely.

  • We still have most of the bumper that came with his set on( I took off the long piece in the front but the 2 side and back pieces are still on).  Aiden doesn't move around too much yet when he is sleeping.  He actually used to move more when i had the wedge in the crib.  Since i took the wedge out, he stays pretty much in the same spot.  I am sure he will be wiggling around more very soon and i will probably remove it when he does.  I dont plan on buying a breathable one unless I need one.  Sorry this isn't much help.

  • I love our breathable bumper! Allie moves ALL over her crib and many times she is right up against the side. She was bumping her head so that is why we got it..we had nothing before. It has some padding to it, I was surprised! I think you should get one. The way I look at it: if it makes her safer then why not. I would hate for something to go wrong and knowing that I could have fixed the issue.
  • Breathable bumper for us!

Well THAT is interesting. We just put a wedge in yesterday because of a suspected case of reflux. I wonder if that is why he squirmed so much, it was the first time it happened...hm.

  • we never used a bumper, breathable or normal -- had a normal one on the crib while she was still sleeping in the bassinet, just so it would look pretty, but took it off when she transitioned into it.
  • I never really reply on here anymore but we had a regular bumper in Ella's crib until she started using it to climb on and move her leg over.

She would wriggle her way to the corner so we just adjusted the Angel Care monitor up a bit so it covered where she would sleep more.  Therefore if for some strange reason she stopped breathing the monitor would go off.

The way I figure it, if she can wriggle her way up to the corner of the crib, she would figure out how to turn her head instinctively so she wouldn't suffocate.

Ditto this. I used the bumper from our set for Shannon, up until we dropped the crib to the lowest level. Same thing for Kyle. At that point, it was removed more for the fact that it would have given the kids an extra leg up to get up and/or out of the crib down the line.

But, if you're paranoid or worried about it... then I'd just remove the bumper.
