Kind of a WWYD

Hypothetically- what is the closest you'd move to your parents/DH's parents?

In a million years when we have enough money to build a house (or buy and existing home but I think building is more likely), an option that has been presented would be for us to build on a farmstead that Clint's parents own (the original house was demolished some 10 years ago). This place is maybe two or three miles down the road from his folks' house.

A year ago when he brought this up to me I was like, Hell no I don't want to live that close. Now when I drive past the place I'm thinking about where we would put the house on the land. Just thinking...

Re: Kind of a WWYD

  • When we first moved up here we lived 3 min down the road from the IL's. I loved it! We could run over anytime to get eggs, or whatever. We were over for dinner all the time, or movie nights. I imagine if we lived that close when baby arrives that we'd be over all the time. Now we're about a 1/2 hour away and it's more of an "event" to drive up there. They fit in visits to us when they come "to town" for grocery shopping, etc. I would live just as close with my parents too.
  • we lived about 3 blocks from ILs up until we moved. it was mostly fine. MIL was good at "popping in" though. usually just as we sat down to dinner. luckily only once when we were having sexy time.

i'd love to live next door to my parents, lol. and DH probably wouldn't mind living right by mine either (would prefer that to by his) but they are 3 hours from us. my family (parents, sibs, spouses) talk about buying a bunch of property upstate and all living there and running different businesses (day care, bakery, gun shop, petting zoo, etc). haha!

  • Yeah, I think my big issue with it then was being worried that DH would revert back to his dependent stage. This stemmed mainly from the fact that while we lived with them for the first month his mother was doing his laundry, making all of his meals (I did my own meals because I was so sick from being pregnant). His mom has been so good at not being intrusive though that I have no worries, and DH sees them pretty much every day now and is able to be independent (now that we're out of their house). I actually wish she dropped in more often.

Now I want to live closer.

  • We live 45 minutes from my parents and 4.5hrs from DH's parents.

I really don't like both areas where our parents live and neither of them are looking to move so we probably will never be all that close.

We see my parents weekly, DH's not so much.  MIL hates to travel and we go there more than they come here.  FIL stops in when he passes through the area on business (happens pretty often).  We are basically going to force them to travel here once DD is here because I refuse to travel that much with an infant.

My sister lives next door to my parents and my other sister lives 3 blocks away.  It's not my cup of tea, but I'm more against it because I don't like the town they live in more than anything.

  • I'd live close to either parents. Currently we're 9 miles from Greg's family, and 10 miles from my parents townhouse (my mom lives there m-f) and an hour from my parents primary home.

I want to buy my grandparents house which is two doors down from my parent's primary home.

Greg's family respects privacy enough that living on their property wouldn't been horrific either.

With our dynamic, I don't think living in our own house on the property would be a big issue.

  • Right now, we live about 10 miles from my parents and 14 from my sis and BIL. They and my parents are about 4 miles apart. In NJ it's different from other states. We have no unincorporated land between towns and cities, and there's traffic... so we measure more in time than distance. It takes 15-20 minutes to get to my parents and about half an hour to get to my sis. Around here, though, a half hour isn't a big deal. I do more than that every day to get to the office, though Google maps says it should be 17 minutes. Ha, at 3 a.m., maybe.
  • We currently live about 10 miles (15-20 mins) from DH's parents, and there are times when that feels too close.  The only saving grace right now is that we lived in a gated complex, and FIL can't get in whenever he wants to.  When DH bought the house, FIL actually tried to get DH to give him a set of keys, so that he could use the place as an escape from MIL.  This was all before I was in the picture, and I am so thankful that DH told him no way.

My parents are much better at giving us our space, and I don't think I would mind living close to them, and I don't think DH would either, but they live in a suburb of San Diego that is just a little too far away from everything for us.

  • We live about 10-15 miles to my parents (20-25 min) and about 5-10 miles from H's parents (about 10-15 min).

They give us our space...until the baby is born....so ask me again in 5 months.

  • As long as we weren't permanently in the same house, I could handle living even next door to my parents or my MIL.

We "own" land by MIL now. There's no deed, it's government land, but since the family's lived there for generations, it's theirs. Now BIL divided the family land up between the brothers, so we have our portion. Then, BIL moved (after all that drama the week after Christmas) and probably won't ever come back. Men in this family are freaking stubborn. We may buy his portion of the land from him. The idea is that we will eventually build out there. We would primarily stay with the orphanage, but then could go to the country to take a few days off.

  • We live about 5 miles from my parents and 40 miles from DH's parents.  It's not too bad though, at least if they need antyhing they're both close enough to get.
