So today is my mom's birthday. Since before Christmas she wanted a Kindle (after she knew I was getting one), at the time I told her maybe for her birthday since I already bought all her Christmas presents. So since then she's been SO excited about getting a Kindle. Like every other conversation is "oooh, I can't wait to get my Kindle" or "when I get my kindle". So Nick was like "you gotta come up with something so she is surprised, like tell her they are on backorder."
So, about a month ago I told her, "oh guess what, bad news, they stopped making the Kindle for a while to fix the glitch that they're having with the freezing up and rebooting (with the non-lighted covers) so I have to wait to get yours" and she was SOOO sad and every other conversation is "I wonder how long I have to wait" "I want my Kindle, this sucks". She doesn't have a computer to check up on this so I told my aunt that if she asks if she's heard anything about it to go along with it, which she did ask my aunt (!) and my aunt went along with it
. One day she said, "guess what I saw today, a Kindle commercial!" and I said, "yeah, that's for the $139 one, without 3G, that's not the one that's broken" and she was sad again.
So today, I'm going over there after work to take her the present - which is a Kindle and a case BUT in a big Lenox box that I packed with printer paper to make it heavy to throw her off (and then I wrapped the Kindle and the cover). I can't wait! I'm going to try to record it for Nick.
Anywho, that was LONG, sorry if I bored you but I wanted to share it, I'm so excited. I love surprising people!
Re: Tricking my mom! (long, sorry)
Oh that is cute!!
Next year you can buy her a computer.
How fun! I love surprising people.
My sister and I did that to my mom last summer - we kidnapped her for a night and wouldn't tell her where we were going. We took her to a Red Sox game and spent the night in downtown Boston. We stopped in Salem, MA on the way to throw her off even more. She was so excited about being in Salem that she thought that was her surprise - she'd always wanted to go. All she knew was that we had to be somewhere by 7pm and it was outside.

Aww, that's fun and sweet=)
Oh and I almost put it in our D90 camera box but then decided she might be disappointed to find a Kindle inside instead - lol.
When Nick proposed (Christmas 07) he wrote a poem (that directed me to where my ring was on the tree) and put it in a humidifier box with printer paper so of course that's where I got this idea.

Oooh I wanna hear about her reaction!
It worked! She was SOOO tricked! I was able to record it but you can barely hear her. I even tricked her with the recording! She was like, why are you holding your phone? And I told her I was waiting for an important text. She laughed when I told her later.
So - I walked in with the big box and she's all, "ooh, what's that?!" She wasn't all psyched to open it I guess b/c she 'knew' it wasn't a Kindle.
So she starts opening it all slow, starting from the side [Nick pointed out you could tell she doesn't want to open it] and is like, looking at the box through this tiny rip and is like, trying to read it and is like, "floating heart bowl?" and I was like, "just open it!"
So she opens the box and see the additional wrapped boxes starts laughing and is like "oooh you're so funny!" and then unwraps the Kindle box and was like, "is this the box from yours? What is this?" and I'm like, "It's a Kindle, it's yours!" and she's like "for real? you're so funny, you were lying! So all that stuff you told me wasn't true!? I told so many people about that! Did Aunt know this? Did you tell her?" I explained how she was in on it and then she went through all the things I told her and how she fell for it all.
She says, "Nick put you up to this, didn't he!?" and when she saw the printer paper she was like, "is this just paper to make it heavy?! Oh, Nick is terrible!"
So anyway, it was perfect! If Campbell wasn't sleeping she would have been much louder I'm sure but it definitely worked. Then she was all giddy to set it up and buy her first book - lol.
