J9 moms - back me up

I've been spending too much time on the TN because stuff from The Bump filters over... but I'm severely shaking my head over an FB exchange.

My SIL posted asking for help about how to get her 6 week old son to sleep in his crib and not in their bed. One of her friends told her to let him CIO. I jump in and say don't do CIO - it's not recommended until 6 months because they can't self-soothe at this age, trust issues, blah blah blah.

And then her trashy cousin says "Just lay him in his crib and let him cry. It will hurt you more than him."  Might I add I have watched this cousin chain smoke all throughout her two pregnancies.

I feel like a dbag because I'm giving advice when I'm not a parent, but it makes me sad to think of my little tiny nephew having to cry and not know if mom is coming back to him.

  • Okay, I know nothing about babies either, but...

Isn't six weeks a little early? My friends have a four month old and last week was his first week in his crib by himself. Now, I think that may have been in his crib in his own room by himself, but I'm not sure...

However, I have another friend who has a sixteen-month old who co-slept with them for almost a year.

And another has a seven month old who doesn't sleep through the night yet, but they didn't start letting her CIO until six months. And even then "CIO" meant waiting no more than 20 minutes and then, after that point, going and getting her.

Here's the link to the What to Expect site (from the same people who do the book series) about "Crying it Out": http://www.whattoexpect.com/first-year/crying-it-out.aspx Notice -- all of this says six MONTHS. The previous page says waking and crying (and needing immediate attention) is fine and even necessary for up to four months.

  • I agree with not letting him CIO. They are still very much learning to recognize parents at 6 weeks and being there to soothe establishes trust. You are not spoiling him.

  • IMHO CIO at 6 weeks is cruel. As pp said, babies aren't really capable of self-soothing until 4-6 months and their tummies are still small so they really do need to eat every few hours still.

  • As far as getting him to sleep, let him fall asleep in their bed and then place him in the crib. I used to hold Amelia every night until she fell asleep and then move her to her crib. Once she got a little older we started a routine and we have no problems getting her to sleep.

  • Yeah, 6 weeks is not ok. That makes me sad, sorry mames :(

I could be the wrong person to talk to though, I didn't make my kids CIO until they were like 2. lol

  • Thanks for validating me! Luckily SIL wrote me back and said she couldn't possibly let him CIO after everything she's read.

  • Late to answer this mames, but 6 weeks is way too young to CIO. Glad your SIL didn't try this. A didn't sleep through the night until he was 8 months old. We didn't try CIO until he was 7 months and I was the one who had a hard time with it.
