Delivery: Maine Med vs Mercy

Hi Ladies! I am once again calling on the experts for some help....

We're pregnant with #2 (yay!)  Had my first appt at Coastal Women's and it went well, but was not happy with the way they have handled a few other things since (ie: lab work, etc). Can't really explain it, but having already had a baby I just don't think CW is a good fit for me. Can anyone recommend their OB, preferably a women.

Also, after doing a lot of research on the birth centers at both Maine Med and Mercy, I am leaning more towards Mercy....can anyone tell me good/bad about their experiences at either hospital.

Thanks again ladies, your help means so much to me! I am new to the area and anxious to find an OB I feel comfortable and happy with :)

Re: Delivery: Maine Med vs Mercy

  • I used CW's and loved them, but haven't been to their new office yet. I had a lot of complications and interacted with all of their Dr's, except one, during a 3 week stint at MMC. I can't say enough good things about MMC. I spent a lot of time there and besides a few grumpy nurses everyone was awesome. L/D was great and my nurse even stayed 30 minutes after her shift ended to help me deliver! The staff on the Mother Baby floor were awesome (a fellow Nestie works there) and if you need it their NICU is amazing. The entire birthing center is new and in the NICU you have private rooms. If you choose to BF, the lactation consultants are wonderful to work with and you can call them or meet with them and they wont bill you.  I have actually gone back a few times just to say hello and show off DD.

I have a few friends that have delivered at Mercy and have had nothing but good things to say also.

  • Where do you live?

I go to Primecare Women's Health in Biddeford and delivered at SMMC and I'd recommend them both.

  • thanks for posting this maeghan, it definitely helps ease my mind about Maine Med :)

FYI: living in S. Portland and will drive reasonable distance for a good OB :)

  • My DD was delivered at Mercy, I loved it!!  My OB office was All About Women and they were fantastic.  I know that the practice has grown since I was seen there, they used to have only 3 female doctors now I think they may have a few more?? but I am not positive.  If we hadn't moved from Portland when I was pregnant with my DS I would have absolutely used them again and delivered at Mercy.  I wish I could have delivered my son there, I had a much better experience at Mercy then I did at the hospital my son was born at.

  • Anne Rainville in Portland and Bob Sansonetti on Rt 1 in Scarborough are my top 2 picks for OB docs.  As for whether they deliver at Mercy or not, I am not sure.  I know they deliver at MMC.  I cannot attest to a hospital.  I should stay out of this one.  ;)
  • I saw (and loved) Dr. Carol Vaughn (sp?) at Generations through Intermed.  I chose Intermed because they have rights to deliver at both Mercy and MMC, so I didn't have to figure that out at 2 months pregnant.  I loved Dr. Vaughn because she was good with things that were possible issues, but she wasn't nutso about anything and was cool with "everything in moderation."  Her nurse Mary was also great.

I delivered at Mercy and loved it.  The nurses were awesome.  I was 2 weeks late but they let me do lots of things to keep trying to labor.  When it didn't work, the c-section crew was great and my recovery went well.  They were also great when I ran into some breastfeeding issues.

I'm not ready to have another kid but I am excited to go back to Mercy.

  • I go to Coastal and love it there. Sorry you didn't have the best experience. I delivered at MMC and thought it was great. The nurses were wonderful and when I had to go in the other night, the nurses and doctors were great. I feel very happy to know that is where I will welcome this next little guy.

A friend of mine has Rainville, I've heard good things. She plans to deliver at MMC also.

This is me too. I was high risk so I also traveled to Portland often for higher level U/S.  I did have to go to L&D triage at MMC once.  I had severe shortness of breath around 26 weeks, and was sent there by ambulance.  The doctor's and nurses that I worked with that day were all wonderful.  I can't say enough good things about them.

  • I've also had issues with Coastal..they just weren't a good fit for me either.

I cannot say enough great things about MMC. Our experience was phenomenal..the doctors and nurses were amazing, and the facilities are just wonderful. DH was very comfortable during our stay too. I would highly, highly recommend it there!

I saw Dr. Rebecca Hunt at Maine Medical Partners - Woman's Health. I know she is a newer OB - I think this may be her 2nd year. But she was very laid back and MH and I liked her a lot. She stopped in while I was in labor but it was actually Dr. Sansonetti that was on when I actually delivered. He was very nice also.

I love Maine Med. The rooms were so clean and I loved all the nurses that helped out. I was actually lucky though and my friend is a nurse on L & D - so she got to be with me thru it all. The main reason we choose Maine Med though was because they have a NICU onsite. We weren't planning on anything going wrong but incase there was an emergency and our LO ended up in the NICU - we wanted to be at the same hospital.

  • If you don't mind me asking, who did you chose as your OB after you left CW's?
