Tropicana update

just got a call from Dr. Ruiz. pup went home yesterday and had a good night at home! I asked her to get a picture of the dog and her owners so I could share it, but the older sister called and said they didn't want the picture to be posted on the internet, so I'll have to wait to see if I can get a picture of just Tropicana with her happy face on. :)

Doc also informed me that their bill went up slightly due to prescriptions for them to take home. and that they have not contributed anything to it. when I spoke to one of the daughters, she told me that she is an "outside dog." the owners told the vet that Tropicana is going to be an indoor dog from now on... I just hope it stays true so that something like this doesn't happen again. =/

I mean, I get that you don't prepare yourself for having an added expense to handle, but being a pet owner, you have to keep it in the back of your mind that unexpected things happen.

am I wrong for being a little bitter to such a sweet dog belongs to people who 1, let something like this happen, and 2, can't manage to take care of 15% of the bill?

Re: Tropicana update

  • Um no, you are not wrong to be bitter.  A girl I knew from college has a dog who broke its leg last year, and it was going to have to be put down if she could not pay to have the leg fixed.  She started a campaign on FB asking for donations for  the vet bills, and even when there was only like $100 left to pay, she was still posting like "So  close to our goal guys, keep on giving!" I thought it was so tacky and irresponsible.  She is a grad student and probably living on student loans, but my feeling is you shouldn't get a pet if you really can't afford unforeseen circumstances.  I doubt the girl I know paid one cent toward the vet bills, and I agree that the owners of the chow should at least take on some responsibility for their pet.
  • Ugh so annoying!  Why even get a dog/pet if you can't handle the responsiblities!

Penny had to get her ear looked at last week, $75 for an ointment. I didn't plan on that, but she's be dog and I love her and want her healthy and pain free.  Their dog got hit by a car because of their negligence.  Unless you live on a farm, I don't understand the concept of an "outside" dog.  Why?  So its there when it's convenient to you?... makes me so mad.

I hope they make her a real indoor dog and buck up and pay for their dog's care.

  • So happy to hear that Tropicana is went home and had a good night!

I don't think your wrong for being bitter, I would be too! I can't believe that they aren't taking any responsibility for what happened to her. It seems like people hundreds of miles away from Tropicana care more about her than her owners do.

I really hope they stick with keeping her as an indoor dog, the next time she gets out she might not be so lucky.

  • Well, probably small comfort, but personal experience: one time while running in MI, a dog that always charged me charged me yet again. This time a big red truck was coming. I stepped off the road, but the truck had to choose between me and the dog. The driver chose the dog. The dog luckily only had a broken leg. After that, the dog was just an indoor dog (shouldn't have been an outdoor dog, anyway, as there are leash laws in this particular county). I lived there a year more, never saw her outside again without a leash.

I would be bitter, too. So many people shouldn't be pet owners. You get a pet, you make a serious commitment that'll involve time and money and serious supervision in addition to the love.

my thoughts exactly! it's like having a child... if you can't afford one, it's probably a good idea to be on birth control and not have unprotected sex. unfortunately, other people don't see it this way. =/

owners said they're going to make a payment when Tropicana has her follow up appointment in a week. we'll see if that happens.

I still haven't met them either. younger daughter wants to get together and meet... she said she'd call me Tuesday and I still haven't heard from her. ugh.

  • I might get flamed for saying this, but I wish her owners never came forward. People who take on rescue animals seek out these special little gals/guys because they want them. I just don't think that someone who has "outdoor-only" animals really loves them. It's hard to think that there was a big, warm king size bed out there for Puppy Chow, and instead she gets the cold outdoors. I hope they stay true to their word and keep her inside. And get off their cheap asssses and pay the 15%.

(sorry for the rant. a bit grumpy from the past few days, and this is something I'm super passionate about!)

  • How can such a flaky family have such a beautiful dog??

You did say that the mother was in the hospital when this went down though, right?  Maybe they're up to their eyeballs in medical bills?  Still, they need to step up for their fur baby.

I think it was actually one of the daughters who was in the hospital. that's another thing... I have had no contact with any parents at all. I'm not sure how old the older daughter is, but the younger one is 16. I spoke to the dad briefly, and I think he only called me to make sure the girls weren't making shiit up about me finding their dog.

I'm super passionate about animals, and it really just makes me sad that such a good dog belongs to people that honestly don't deserve her. I really hope they keep their word and keep her indoors from now on. I'm not gunna lie, I drove by (what I think is) their house this morning and was looking to see if she was outside.

  • I completely understand why you feel the way you do. I really hope the owners can pay up the remainder of the vet bill, after all it is their dog.

Hopefully they'll be more careful about letting her out and will keep her as an indoor dog.

No flames here. I completely agree with you. It's unfortunately that this dog has such crappy owners. You'd think that when a bunch of internet strangers help out with the vet bills for a dog that they'll never meet, the least that the owners could do is pay the remaining balance. The accident was their fault for being neglectful owners and keeping their dog outside in the first place. I really hope that they learn from this experience and really do decide to keep their dog indoors in the future.

  • I think people who have outdoor dogs should not have dogs (unless I guess it is on some kind of farm with tons of land and really good shelter somewhere...).  Even in that case, I think it is sad to have a dog that is not part of the family.

Then again, I sleep in a tiny curled up ball because I sleep with 100+ lbs of dog every night and a husband.  Heck, Sadie won't even lie on the floor...

  • I also do not understand having outdoor dogs. I love Sully, and have a hard time sleeping on vacation when he's not around.

I seriously hope this family realizes how fortunate they are that someone cared as much as you did and did everything you could to save her. I would totally be frustrated and angry too! Jerks.

  • Ditto everything all of you said.  I agree that it may have been better for the family never to have come forward, and the family probably should have just told the vet that they didn't have the resources to properly tae care of the dog, and it's really sad and pathetic that they keep the dog outside, and they don't even have an emergency fund for dog emergencies, or pet insurance.  I could rant on for a long time too.  This kind of thing makes me really mad.

And just to add to the subject, I really don't understand people who let their cats out either.  B and I see cats around our neighborhood that are well fed and have collars.  We live in frickin Chicago, I mean, come on people.

  • I think you all covered exactly how I feel about this already. I hope that things work out for the best for both the owners and Ms. Tropicana.

  • well I met with the family last night. they actually seem really, really, really nice. that's no excuse for having an "outside dog" but still, it makes me feel better to know that Tropicana is truly loved at home. they said she's going crazy because she wants to go outside and run around, but they're making her stay in to rest and heal.

the older daughter, who is 21, was in the hospital when the incident occurred. they think that Trop was out looking for the younger daughter (16), who was visiting the hospital. I hope they're able to pull together at least a little bit of money to put towards her bill.

they seem really focused on keeping her indoors, so that's a plus. they got me a really sweet card too. :)
