Flood

My main water pipe just bursted in my basement. There's so much water you could swim in it. Everything I've had during my childhood is gone, my wedding dress was down there, my luggage, my house decorations... everything.

I just called the insurance claim and the adjustor will call call us IN A FEW DAYS. So until then, we have no clue what we're going to do. It's been like an hour since it all happened. I guess the next plan is to try to get the water out.

Re: Flood

  • Oh, no!  Hopefully you can salvage as much as possible and dry it out... I am so sorry!  What a nightmare!

  • That really sucks! Take pictures of everything ASAP for your insurance claim.

  • *hugs* That sucks. If you have a lot that you think is ruined, take pictures and call around to fire restoration places. We had a TON of water damage after a neighbors house caught fire as a kid, and they were able to save a lot, including photo albums. I'd also pull your insurance policy and be familiar with it before they send a rep out.

Do you know what caused the line to burst?

  • Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope you're able to salvage most of your things and that the insurance agent calls you back soon.

  • Oh, no!  I would be devastated to lose all my photos and history.

Your insurance will probably cover professional services to try and salvage your belongings.

  • That's awful. I'm so sorry.
  • Thanks ladies.

First, we have no clue how the pipe bursted. We took a shower about an hour before it happened and didn't know about it until Nate went to go wash his hands and no water came on. He called our water company and went down to the basement where the pipes were and saw the flood. It took them about a half an hour to get out here for an emergency shut down of our water. It just completely detached itself from our house line.

We just got done getting everything out of bins. We have the water draining out right now, but we can't get a plumber over until tomorrow at 4pm.

That being said, we won't be able to stay home tonight unless we want to pee outside and not shower, so we're heading to a friends for the night.

Thanks for all your advice, my pictures and cards are all out drying, my wedding dress is hanging out to dry, then going to the cleaners tomororw, and I took pictures of EVERYTHING. We have alot of ruined stuff, it makes me very sad.

    Thanks again :)

  • That is awful. Hopefully insurance will step up and help you out as much as you need. Keeping my fingers crossed for you that everything dries out and you're not left with too much damage.

  • My mom had a fire in her house back in 06. The smoke damage (to stuff that didn't get burned) was devastating, but you'd be amazed how great some of the stuff came back after being sent off to be cleaned. The professionals are very good. I hope it all works out ok for you and am sorry that you're having to deal with this.
  • I'm so sorry you're going through this.  B and I had a foundation leak and huge problems earlier in the year, so I know what it's like.  Good luck getting everything fixed and cleaned!

  • Oh, no!  How horrible.  I hope it doesn't really take them days to come out and that you can salvage some of your things.
