another opinion re: high speed rail
I was shocked to find out my husband supports the gov. turning down the money for the train. DH is such a huge supporter of trains, but in this case he thought it was a waste of money - the wrong route, the wrong type of train, he doesn't think the fed gov't should be so involved with the states, etc. He would support a high speed rail between orlando and atlanta though, for example. I go back and forth with how I feel about it though.
Anyway, this was in today's paper, just thought I'd share:
His action sparked immediate bipartisan outrage, not because the train route makes all that much sense, but because the feds are paying for most of it.
It would be cheaper, faster and easier to drive to Tampa than it would be to take this train. And that makes me wonder what kind of chicken bones they are tossing on the ground to come up with these big ridership numbers.
But who cares. Studies simply are necessary foreplay for spending.
The real reason you build this train is because the feds are kicking in $2.4 billion of the $2.7 billion cost.
If the feds give you $2.4 billion to build a horse trail to Tampa, you build that, too.
Only in politics does doing something that seems to make little sense become the most sensible thing to do.

Re: another opinion re: high speed rail
When I read the original article, I was a little confused as to why they'd do Orlando to Tampa, but I looked at it as phase 1, where they said there would be multiple phases, and possibly connecting to Miami and Jax, which seemed like it made more sense.
I think unless he's willing to come up with a better solution and get plans in progress for a FL funded rail, he shouldn't just turn down the Fed $ though... because it sounded like statewide votes were cast for a high-speed rail, and it running through the whole state would be awesome.
I don't have a problem with involvement by the fed in state issues, especially when it's a project that will help spur the state economy (at least in the short-term which is needed), won't cost the state and the money is already slated.
Lawmakers in FL are now looking to see if there are any options to bypass Scott. We'll see if it's over or not.
Plus, I would still take a train to save 30 minutes on average on a 2 hour ride. That's 25% time-savings.
