Just shut up or move on....

I have a question for you ladies.  Since I came back from maternity leave in July 2009 my job has not been the same.  While I was out, over half the company was laid off and my position morphed into this mixture of 4-5 different positions all rolled into one.  Sounds good to some you may say so what is the problem?

The problem I am having is that more times than not I spend most of my day looking for work to do.  I have my spurts where I am busy from the time I walk through the door until I leave (usually when I am covering for someone who is out sick or on vacation).  Now don't get me wrong, I don't mind the lack of work...but when it becomes the norms for months at a time, for me that is a problem.  I brought this up to my boss at my last review and she assured me that things would be picking up as I take on more duties with the manager I am supporting.  But that has yet to really come to fruition.

So should I:  a) just shut up and be happy that I have a job; b) bring it up to my boss again in hopes that I will find more work to do; or c) look for another job and move on?

Some people tell me that I am stupid for complaining, but I really feel like I am wasting my time and their money by sitting around most of the day waiting for work to do.  As you can see I am on this site now on the clock.

Re: Just shut up or move on....

  • I would ask for more work to do. There is always something that can be done (so they say), but I understand your frustration. If it doesn't change, if it were me, I would look elsewhere. There may be a company out there that could use a hardworking person, like yourself. Maybe talk with your supervisor about your frustrations again just to see what she says. She should at least have some sort of answers for you... if it doesn't change, then your supervisor should understand your reasons for leaving. Hang in there! There are always options, maybe even opportunities that you can't see yet. Smile
  • If you're dissatisfied with your job then move on. Maybe a job where there isn't a lot of work to be done is not the place for you, but another person would love it. I say stick it out and see if things pick up, but if nothing changes then start looking for a more challenging job.
  • I don't know why people say you shouldn't complain. The worst thing for me is to have nothing to do at work.

I find it odd that you have the responsibilities of 4-5 people, yet still have nothing to do.

I'd go to your boss every time there's down time and say you're available to work on other projects. If you find that there really isn't anything to do, IMO there's no harm in looking for something else that would make your days more fulfilling.

  • I work for an alternative investment company.  Most of my work prior to maternity leave involved interacting with clients about their investment and insurance activities.  The smaller jobs that got added to my my primary role have all but come to a stand still since most of our clients are still hesitant to start investing again.  Most of my work these days are "busy work projects" (i.e. data entry or fact checking...things that are very boring to me and I complete very quickly even when I try to pace myself and spread them out.)

I have insurance work to do, but it comes in waves, which is at a lull right now because my manager is not issuing any new policies or sending out any portfolio reviews.  I think I should just start looking for something else because I am not being used to my full capacity and it sucks.  I would rather be busy all day instead of twiddling my thumbs.

  • I can relate to this so much!

My previous job was very busy, fast paced and I had so many different things to do. I loved it. It was for a non-profit, though and after 3 years I decided that I wanted something more focused and that paid more money. So, after 4 months of searching/applying, I got my current job. I thought it would be a step up and less chaos, but still things I liked to do. I feel that I was sold a different job. I found out in the past 3 months that I've been here that I'm here only to push paperwork and do mailings that my boss doesn't want to do. LITERALLY, 3 or 4 days a week I sit at my computer reading news online just to pass the time. I'm so extrmelely bored and frustrated with this place. What's worse, is that I heard that the last 2 girls in my position both left at a year due to boredom as well.

So, I started keeping my eyes open for other job opportunities (even though I felt guilty about looking only after 3 monts). My current boss is okay and the organization is great, but i know I will lose my mind if I'm here for much longer.

Just be prepared. As soon as you do start putting your res out there again, you'll find something. I sent out 4 resumes two weeks ago and last Wednesday I got a call from a company VERY interested in me and my experience. I had two phone interviews and an interview this past Friday. They are going to make an offer either to me or the other candidate this afternoon!

I feel guilty that I might be resigning my current job after 3 months, but if I know I'm bettering myself and my career/salary, I'll make the change now.

    Good luck!
