migraines on off week?

Anybody else on the pill form of b/c have migraines the week of the placebo pills? I have been on Ocella (Yasmin) since August and the past 3 months the week of my placebo pills I get terrible migraines. I used to be on OTC Generic (Tri-Sprintec) and never had this issue.... Making a doctors appointment to talk with her to see if they could be related but just seeing if any others have had this issue?

Re: migraines on off week?

  • You never got them when you didn't take the pill?

I'd talk to your doctor (you have nothing to lose by asking her, and could be avoiding the headaches), and she can figure out if they are actually migraines because of the pill or headaches due to hormones, a few midols might even end up being the answer, I'd go for the doctors point of view though.

  • I get migraines at the start and end of my period - perhaps you're experiencing the same?  I am on the pill and have been for 10 years but I've gotten migraines like this for as long as I can remember, I agree with the previous poster though, if you havent gotten them before, talk to your doctor for sure!  Good luck!
  • Yes - I got horrible ones. I decided to stop taking BCPs.
  • I had them too that week but my ob/gyn put me on Enjuvia (just a hormone) for the days I was taking the placebo pills. She said basically my body was having withdrawls from the hormones that are put in my body with the normal pills. I'm on Beyaz, was on Yaz for a while and have taken the Enjuvia with both. Its helped tremendously.

  • I have had migraines before - no rhymn or reason to why I got them or when I got them... would get maybe 1 or 2 a year and a good night sleep or nap in a quiet dark room with a towel over my face could get rid of them.. just excedrin migraine would help get me to a point to sleep. But now they are 3+ days long and prescription migraine meds only dull them. I went into urgent care and they gave me a shot this week ... but I still have my headache tonight.

I've seen "beyaz" advertised - how does that differ from yaz? I know how yas and yasmin differ (3 vs 7 day placebo pills)

  • Yes, I used to. To be fair, I still get migraines with my period, and I'm no longer on bc and haven't been for years. It never happened until I was on the Nuva Ring, though, and I got my first one, my first cycle, during the "out" week.

    This exactly.

  • Ditto what rdanielleu said. BC actually helped stop my headaches. I had awful ones that not even Excedrin Migraine could touch. However, when I go on a placebo week I get awful headaches because my body is on withdrawal from the hormones. I just take my pill packs back to back to avoid the headaches. You could talk to your doctor about that if you're not having trouble during the active weeks. Also, a pill can take about 3 months to fully get into your system. Your body may have become accustomed to the difference in hormone levels from OTC to Ocella and now when you don't take them during the placebo week, it may be causing withdrawal headaches.

ETA: Why did you switch from OTC?

beyaz is basically the new yaz, with folic acid added. Yaz has a generic now and the same company needed a new name brand BC so they came up with Beyaz. I was on Yaz at first, then switched to Beyaz because my gyn always gives me samples and had no problem with the switch. They have both helped my PMDD greatly!

I was on OTC up until 2008 when TBXH and I got married... when we split in 10 I got back on BCP ... my doctor wanted me on either Yasmin or OTC... I didn't like the weight gaining side effect as I'm still working to loose that. Yasmin doesn't have that as a side effect so she prescribed that one for me.

  • I get them. I normally get one between day 1 to 3 of placebos, and then I get another in the last day or two or placebos. They got really bad so I went to the doctor; she said that it has to do with the levels of estrogen in the body. The pill raises these, and sometimes for some people, when they have the sudden decrease in the hormones (placebo week) it can cause migraines due to the hormone shift. She gave me a medication called relafen (or nambutone). It has worked wonders and solved the problem. I take one or two during that week and haven't had a problem since. GL!
