Cheese Tray?

I have to supply a cheese tray for a bachelorette party wine-tasting this weekend. I have no idea where to start! Anyone made one before? What would be a good variety to have? Any suggestions of places to buy the cheese? My thoughts were to check out Whole Foods Saturday morning since it's close, but I'm open to other suggestions.

I believe there will be around 10-15 people, so I'm hoping for a few varieties and maybe some crackers/nuts/grapes to supplement the cheese. Also hoping to not spend very much!

 TIA!

Re: Cheese Tray?

  • Trader Joe's is awesome for cheese - lots of selection and great prices. You could go to a specialty cheese shop too - France44 or Surdyk's cheese shop - but will pay a bit more there.

I'd do one soft cheese, one hard cheese and then something different. Or you can always try the one cow's milk cheese, one sheep's milk cheese and one goat's milk cheese approach.

Some of my favorite cheeses: brie; dill havarti; manchego; GOOD cheddar; Blue Stilton. It's fun to pair them with olive spreads, some almonds, high quality fruit pastes/marmalades/spreads.

  • If you're in the St. Paul area, Mississippi Market has a great cheese selection and they can work with you to put a cheese tray together.

Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
  • lunds/byerlys has a TON of great cheese. here are some of my favorites:

sartori - bellavitano (sort of a cross between a cheddar and a parm)

    goat cheese w/ honey

    rembrandt - aged gouda

purple moon - cabernet soaked cheddar

    brie

  • Kowalski's always has a good cheese section.  On the weekends they usually have samples you can try.

  • I love baked brie with a blackberry jam or other odd jam.

Buy a sheet of cresent dough (but in the whole sheet, not stenciled out for cresents) and wrap it around the wheel of brie.  Bake according to cresent directions and serve warm with crackers and jam!

  • Apricot Stilton is one of my faves, as is Manchego with honey.

I've had good luck with Kowalski's cheese department as well as Surdyks.  (you can generally sample stuff at Surdyks which is nice)  Trader Joes is good - just can't try it ahead of buying it.

For sides, I recommend grapes, whole grain crackers, some nuts (almonds and pecans are always good), apple pieces, and honey.

  • I ditto everyone else. Just DON'T go to Cub and buy one of those pre-made cheese trays! :)

  • Lund's in Northeast has a great cheese guru - if she's still there, her name is Liz.  She did a presentation at the store for one of my classes when I was student teaching.  Also, Surdyk's has the best cheese selection in the city, and it's only a block away.  I'd head over there.

GAWD, I miss Lund's.  and Surdyk's.  and Minneapolis in general.

  • Costco actually has some pretty decent cheeses for good prices.  I know some friends of ours have done cheese trays recently and got their cheese at Costco.

Last I knew she was still there.  She was one of my resident's at the apt community I used to work at.  Great lady.
