Booked hotel in Portland ME! Need rec's

on what to do!   We are going April 1 -3, so it should be a bit warmer out by then.

Tips on restaurants, can't miss stuff and more!  We are staying near the airport (thanks to priceline), so I guess it is pretty central!

Thanks!

  • i haven't been to portland but i'd check out yelp.com for reviews of restaurants and activities

  • I love Portland! Head into Old Port (maybe 20 minutes from the airport area).  It is lovely to walk around and window shop.  The Eastern Promenade, Baxter Park, and Fort Allen are beautiful to walk around in, too.  Gritty MacDuff's is a fun brewpub.  Fore Street is my favorite restaurant there, it's downtown.

Oh, and if the SeaDogs are playing (not sure if they are that early), it is a super-cute tiny park to see a game.  Smaller than McCoy but they make it look like a mini-Fenway so it's kitchy and fun!

  • I'm not too familiar with downtown Portland, but Freeport is about 20 minutes away and has tons of outlet stores and the huge LL Bean flagship store

  • check out rest.com as well for places to go.  That way you can get a deal on eats as well :)
  • Haven't been to Portland but I have been to Freeport. I second Gritty McDuff's and LL Bean ... the flagship store is open 24 hours a day.

  • We usually go in the off-season (winter/early spring) and drive along the coastline enjoying the view without the crowds.  There's excellent outlet shopping in Kittery and Freeport. The Maine Diner (on Route 1 in Wells) is a must-stop for us when we're in the area -- their blueberry pancakes are enormous and their red flannel corned beef hash is excellent (dinner options are also tasty).  We also usually stop at the Stonewall Kitchen headquarters store in York for grazing (lots of free samples) or lunch at their cafe.
