And by "beginning," I mean "haven't actually bought anything but am interested.
Any Knitters out there want to give me a learn-to book ideas? I have some friends who knit, but I refuse to know nothing when asking for help.
Thanks! (also, sorry about the local post, but there isn't a "hobby" board)
Re: Beginning Knitter here
I really like stich and b!tch. it gives projects practicing what you're learning so it's more than just swatches.
I also really like the knittinghelp.com site. A lot of videos to help learn different techniques/stitches.
I just taught myself back in November and the first thing that I made was a simple drop stitch scarf. Since then I've knit a bunch more scarves, a hat, and I'm almost done with my first pair of mittens! Don't waste your money buying any books because everything you need to know is online and free. My favorite website for knitting tutorials is http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/learn-to-knit They have all sorts of videos, from how to cast on, knitting, purling, binding off, increases, decreases, etc.
Also, another good source for learning how to knit is the local yarn shops. My 3 favorite are 3 Kittens Needle Arts in Mendota Heights, Knit'n from the Heart in Woodbury, and Darn. Knit. (Anyway) in Stillwater.
Last but not least, check out the Crafts board. People ask knitting questions all the time on that board. Oh, also very important, if you're not a member yet, sign up for a free account on www.ravelry.com It's a great place to find all sorts of patterns. Have fun!
I have a hard time reading how to knit - I have to see it to get it. If I was going to teach myself, I'd pick something easy like a scarf or basic wash cloth and watch videos online to learn how to cast on, knit, purl and bind off.
If you have the time and can afford to take a class, the ones at The Yarnery are really good. In the beginner class, you knit a pair of mittens which really gives you the basic techniques you need to do more complicated things. They also have a clinic where they can help you with a project or explain new techniques.

Well your post inspired me!! I have been wanting to learn to knit for awhile. After reading this, I thought 'why not now!?' So I got on-line and taught myself! I knitted for a few hours while watching tv. It was great!
I thought this video was really helpful to start!

She has another video teaching the basic knit stitch that I watched too.
I actually already had some yarn and needles. But I think I am going to buy some bigger needles tonight and start a new scarf, because I want to see more progress and move quicker. I has size 8 and the knit was pretty small. My friend suggested getting size 10 or 11. So I think I may do that tonight! It was pretty exciting!
So thanks for the inspiration! And good luck!
Thanks, ladies!! I will be heading off to Joann today and hopefully to one of your classier suggestions time willing!
IndyBride2: I can't believe you already sat down and started knitting! I'm totally jealous, but I now strive to be you!
and, @loveablesarah: too bad you live in Maplewood or else I would say let's meet up and learn together! Alas, I'm in *** Rapids.
What is this "stitch and b!tch" all about? It seems fabulous. At the very least, I should make knitting friends and then during the summer I could take the dog to the park and knit away!
the stitch and b!tch I referred to is a book.
There are a lot of knitting/stitch and b!tch groups too though. I go to one for our attachment parenting group every Tues night.
I don't know of any local yarn shops out in CR, but Amazing Threads in Maple Grove is a pretty nice little shop. I've only been there once though.
My favorite stores are Borealis in Saint Paul and Lila & Claudine's in Mahtomedi. I'm actually not a huge fan of the yarnery.
It's funny how everyone has their favorites? I love the Yarnery. I refuse to step foot in Three Kittens and I know tons of people who love it.
I really need to get to Borealis one of these days. I'd love to take a weekend and check out all the LYS in the Twin Cities, without DH of course or he'd take my credit card away.

The last couple times I've been in the yarnery it's been a much more enjoyable experience, but when I was crocheting a blanket for my sister a few years ago, they were awful.
There is a yarn shop hop every spring. It's only 6 or 7 shops, but I had fun with it last year. I'd love a buddy this year
