Article: The 10 Most Irritating, Least Helpful Parenting Tips Ever

I found this particularly entertaining and I thought some of the moms and/or soon-to-be moms would also enjoy.

Re: Article: The 10 Most Irritating, Least Helpful Parenting Tips Ever

  • I love it!

My latest was one of the cashiers at Publix (admittedly not even 20 years old and not a mom, but knew from her sister that was six years younger than her), telling me that I should be feeding Jonathan yogurt regularly at 6 months old because he obviously needed it since he got an ear infection. Huh?

I honestly think there should be a class in high school for kids to learn manners, etiquette, and common courtesy. Oh wait, that's for the parents to teach. We're screwed.

  • I've been lucky to not be showered with unsolicited advice yet, but I'm sure when I start showing I'll get comments when I'm out in public. The only one I have gotten is 'get your sleep now' and believe me, I am. Most nights I'm in bed by 8:30... lol

  • I think the most annoying advice I've gotten is "you're never REALLY ready". I think I can be more ready than I am currently.

  • Yeah, the sleep advice is useless. You really can't not do laundry or make food or put anything away for two months. You can give yourself permission to nap more, if you really really need it, but you can't be sleeping every time they do, nor does your prenatal sleep somehow go into a sleep bank that cashes out when you're sleep deprived later.

YES. Thank you. I hate hearing "Well, if you waited until you were ready, you'd never have kids!" Fine, maybe you're never *totally* ready, but you can certainly have a financial, professional and marital goals before you have kids.
  • My family has gone beyond subtle advice. My grandparents have just started resorting to saying "hurry up" whenever they see us.

  • I haven't been bothered by unsolicited advise much, but I really wish people would stop touching my belly.

Seriously, I'm 14 weeks. What you see poking out from my shirt is not the baby. It is evidence of my recent gluttony.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Jason and I have had a clear plan since before we got married. We want to have both cars and all other consumer debt paid off before having kids. Yes, I'll be 30 before we start but that's not the end of the world.

  • I got the passive-aggressive "your baby isn't wearing shoes/socks" judgment at Whole Foods when I was eating lunch with V and a lady walked out of the restroom, looked at her and said "Oh, you're so cute!  Where are your shoes?"

I am guilty of the "enjoy these moments, they grow up so fast" line.

  • A few of the words of advice that I have received lately. 1. Give him a bottle of formula and put cereal in it and he will sleep through the night. 2. He is training you. 3. Just let him cry it out. Umm 12 weeks old is to young to CIO. 4. Maybe you should evaluate your life before you have baby number 2. This was related to me returning to work.

Honestly, if more people thought like this, I'm convinced we'd have less divorce, f-ed up kids, and drama in general.

And I get asked all the time if Jonathan is my first because he isn't STTN at 7 months old. Sorry, some kids just don't do it. And no amount of cereal in a bottle of formula is going to do it (especially when I will wake up in pain from too much milk anyway).

  • Exactly. They've now proven scientifically that formula fed babies and/or rice cereal fed babies do not sleep through the night earlier than breastfed babies, nor do those things have more calories. They are harder to digest, but the digestion length has nothing to do with how much faster they get hungry; it has to do with blood sugar, just like with grown people.
