XP WWYD re: lost key on walk UPDATED

I posted this on H&F, but I know yall are a tad more "safe" than I am, so I figured I'd ask.

Tonight I went on a walk and stuck my house key in my shoe like always.  I get back to the house and my key is gone!  Its 10:00 at night, so Im not going to retrace my steps tonight, but would it be worth it tomorrow to try to find it?  I really dont think Im going to find it, I covered a good distance too, so there's really no telling where it fell out.  I live in a fairly large neighborhood, so pegging my key to my house would be hard.

So WWYD?  Would you go out and try to find it in the light tomorrow, or would you declare it a loss?

Update:  I just retraced my steps and no key.  My mom doesnt want me to spend the money to rekey the doors, so if something happens yall have full rights to tell me (or really my mom)  "I told you so."

  • How many doors does the key open? After having my house broken into, I would do a short search tomorrow then I would get a new deadbolt/lock/key. It would be less than $40 and well worth it for peace of mind.
  • Well, all the doors, so 3, technically 4 if you count the sunroom door that we usually close and lock.

  • ditto LB.

Hope you find it! It could happen! :)

  • Agree w/ LB. Don't search for hours but at least try to look for it. If you can't find it, change your locks.

  • You might be able to rekey the locks. That could be a cheaper option than new locks. They have kits at Lowes/Home Depot in the area with locks. Good luck!

  • I lost a key on a run once, but I was able to narrow down where it happened. I found it, but I never carried it the same way again.

Do you put it IN your shoe? When I run with my keys (usually car keyfob), I unstring the first lace on one side, run the lace through the key, back through the hole & tie like normal. No way that sucker is getting off. Yes, it takes a little time, but I won't lose it that way.

  • I would retrace your steps and look for it. We had our locks rekeyed by a locksmith for about $20 a door.

That's what I do, too. Or put it in pockets that zip up completely closed.

Also, ditto PP's, do a quick search but then just change the locks if you don't find it.

  • I'll tie on my shoe from now on. I've always just stuck it in my shoe when I didn't have a pocket, I won't ever do that again. I'm going to search for it after work today and then see what my mom wants to do, since they're her doors.

  • Yep. That's exactly what I do too.

  • I'd look a bit for it but not stress and just replace the locks.
