What are your favorite healthy eating tips, tricks, or foods?? I have seriously got to change the way I eat. Trail mix for breakfast at 10:30am, a crappy or no lunch, sweets immediately after work, and then usually a somewhat healthy dinner are just not cutting it!!
My H is a sweetsaholic and there is always a nice array of sweets in the house. I don't want to deprive him since he could live off sugar and fat alone and never gain weight. I really need ideas of what I can keep around to help me from pigging out on his sweets after work and for just healthy eating all day long.
I would really appreciate any suggestions you might have. I fully admit I'm an idiot when it comes to knowing what food are good sources of what nutrients like fiber, protein, etc.
Re: Healthy Eating
There is a daily eating/exercise thread on H&F you might want to look at.
Also, pick up a copy of the book "Eating Clean."

Overweight here, but working on it!
I've found I know what I should be eating/ordering/making but actually doing so is the hard part. I know carbs are the debil, but I won't cut out food groups from my diet because I would cutAbitch after I'd been deprivred. I think its best to buy foods you know YOU like and will want to snack on. Let your DH have his sweets. Just keep the things you would crave out of sight, out of mind. He can stash them wherever he likes, just don't keep them out on the counter where they will be staring you down like the Geico Dollar bills stack!
And when I say "diet" I mean the foods you intake, not plastic/fake foods.
I don't eat anything fake. No fake sugars, no "diet" drinks, no margarine, no prepackaged meals. If its not real, your body does not need it anyway. <-- no brainer. I would rather eat less CANE sugar then gorge on high-fructose-corn syrup. I cannot process aspertame or saccherine at all. I can tell in one sip if a drink has anything like that in it.
I think making better choices can be the hardest part of adapting your diet. Like you should really aim to eat your foods from the perimeter of the store. The boxed items in the center should not be your sustainable foods, but so many people make them the be-all, end-all, and eat the majority of their food intake from there. If it has more than 5 ingredients and it expires in Nov of 2012... it probably not that good for your digestive system, KWIM?
Use sparkpeople.com, dailyplate.com, OR if you have a smartphone, I've dowloaded MyFitnessPal and Fooducate apps to look at nutritional values. I find I go over on sugar pretty much EVERYday, so its helped me see the foods that are more unhealthy than you'd realize. For EX: yogurt. If I buy a Chobani Greek Strawberry yogurt = 19g of sugar in one teeeeeeny tiny cup. I'm supposed to have 31g FOR THE DAY.
Or I can get the plain for 6g of sugar and add in granola.

I'm definitely NOT an expert on this. I do my best to eat pretty clean, but when I want a hamburger and fries or a red velvet cupcake I don't deprive myself. For me what works best is eating small meals every three hours. For snacks I love greek yogurt with honey, or cottage cheese with raisins or blueberries. Lunches and dinners I usually have chicken or lean ground beef. And I don't limit myself with carbs. I love bread, potatoes and rice so I eat them, just not a lot and I get whole wheat pasta and bread. I think you just have to find what works for you. Here's a website I just found, I haven't made anything from it yet but it looks good: http://www.skinnytaste.com/ HTH
