Question for the moms, nannies, and/or babysitters

I've been offered an occasional gig babysitting a 10 month old by a friend's older sister that visits Jacksonville every other weekend. Her bf lives here and she lives in Savannah so sometimes when she visits they want to be able to go out without her little girl (completely understandable). My issue is that she asked me how much I want per hour. Truthfully, I have no idea. I've watched children at a variety of ages but I usually do it as a favor for close friends. What is a reasonable amount to ask for?

Re: Question for the moms, nannies, and/or babysitters

  • I've paid anywhere from $5-10 per hour.  It depends on the person, the possible friendship with the person, if they're infant CPR certified, if they're coming to my house or we're dropping DS off, etc.
  • I don't babysit for less than $10, but I have 9 years professional childcare experience and all of the training that goes with that. If I didn't have the experience I would do it for $8 an hour.

  • I don't do it for less than $10, but, like Lanerbell, I've been in the field for a long time, and have a lot of training and experience. I second $8.

  • I also think $8 sounds fair. The baby is still young enough that you're not going to be entertaining it a ton, and I'm sure they're fine with you taking places or doing your own thing, if necessary, so it's not like you're tied down to their house, helping with homework, making snacks, dinner, etc.

  • Thanks for the input. $8 was the first number that popped into my head but I didn't really know if it was reasonable. I babysat all through high school (took CPR courses and other training) and part of college but I haven't babysat consistently or done any of those courses in a long time so my training/experience isn't recent.

  • This was the first bit of sticker shock I got when coming to Jax. I can't seem to find a reasonable adult (i.e. not 16 years old and "I've been babysitting for 6 years now") for less than $10/hr for one, $12 for two.

  • I would think $8-$10/hour is definitely reasonable, I'd probably have offered to pay you $10/hr.
