Minimum amount of time at a job...

Would you stay with a job just to keep from looking like a job hopper? Say you take a job and get contacted by a head hunter for another job...new job is good, but benefits of the prospective job could be really good. (WAH, pay, etc) Would you pass so that you don't get a and rap? My industry is a small world...people talk. Job hoppers in general are frowned upon...so I'm curious how heavily that weighs for you.

  • I guess it depends on how much I wanted to get out of my current job, but if I was happy enough and really weighed the pros vs. cons of leaving and they came out pretty even, I would probably stay with the current job.  I am in HR and can tell you that one of the things that hiring managers have a hard time with is people who jump around from position to position.  To them, that shows instability, whether it's actually the case or not.  However, if the new position is something that you just can't refuse, then you have an easy way of explaining yourself down the road - not because you left for fear of being fired or burning out, etc.  If you do leave, hopefully you have great tenure at the next position and that will show that you were serious about the position you left for and are now in a more stable situation.  GL!
  • I think it depends.  One quick job change does not make you a job hopper if you have longevity with other employers.  On-the-other-hand, if you are switching jobs every 1 year - 2 years then it would be different.

  • in my experience i would say its more than just the time that you stay at the job. to reiterate what someone said earlier ksorry, on my phone and cant remember idl if you were habitually switching jobs every couple years or m months it might be a bad thing. considering the circumstamces though you have to do whats right for your family, too.

  • I barely made it 6 months at the job from hell for just this reason.  It was horrible - illegal business practices, shady customer billing (standard to overcharge), verbal abuse from the owners, demeaning treatment of the women employees (owners were foreign and HATED women), etc.  I quit that job at 6 months without anything lined up.  It was scary, but was a good decision.  I heard that within a month of me leaving, about half of the employees left, too (small company, ~20 employees).
