Can we talk about Palin and the n-word?

Anybody seen this video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9T0FI2axbU (Warning: whoever put this video online apparently didn't think anybody's work monitor is visible to other people, so N-word flashes on the screen.)

Palin was speaking at a rally, and somebody yelled out, "And he's a n****r!" It looks like she heard it, judging by the way she stumbled over the next few words, but she didn't say anything.

Makes me so proud of my country and my fellow citizens. Super Angry

  • This post would be so much more fun on E08.

  • Good point! I generally stay over here because otherwise, I'd probably never get work done. But I'll post it over there.

  • It wasn't clear to me what was shouted.  Is there some other documentation?

I can't tell either, but I could see how it could be heard as the n-word.  However, if we're having trouble hearing after putting it on playback, I don't think it's a stretch to assume Palin couldn't understand what was said clear enough to condemn it.

  • I heard it pretty well, and Palins pause made it seem as if she knew what was said also.

Her hesitation makes it clear she heard something, but I don't think it's outside the realm of likelihood that she wasn't certain what was said.  I mean, think about telling a story.  A person could be sitting right next to you and say something while you're speaking, or even while you're taking a breath between statements.  But because you're talking and/or thinking about what you're saying, while you hear the person next to you talking, you don't know what they just said.

Also, if you listen to one of the linked videos that claims the person said 'redistributor' instead, while I'm not convinced that is what was said, the slowed version does show 5-syllables being yelled, with the 3rd being the strongest at the 'ih' sound.  It could be doctored, I don't know.  And clearly if it was the n-word, it would be wrong and hateful and not representative of most McCain supporters.

I just think it's expecting a bit much to expect a public speaker to hear and clearly understand every random thing shouted at a rally and then call out the inappropriate ones on the spot.

  • I have never stated that this action was representative of all McCain supporters, however there is not doubt in my mind that (a) it was the n-word (b) Palin indeed heard it and just kept on going.

  • It's not clear to me either.
And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
