I got approved to take the ARE!  *gulp*!!!  Have you taken any tests yet?  I forget if you're on that track? (oops...totally just typed TESTES instead of tests.  HAHAHAH.)  I'm nervous to sign up for my first test - I think I forgot how to study.  :-(

I kind of don't want to tell anyone "in real life" that I'm testing because I don't want the never ending "How is it going!?!?!?!" People mean well but I'm nervous enough as it is.

Re: ***breezy***

  • Wow congrats! Sorry I didn't see this until now.

I have been verrrryy unimpressed with NCARB and the ARE so I am very cynical and crabby abou the whole thing.

I am not done with IDP completely, are you?  I know you can test now before being done. Is that what you did? How did you go about doing it?

My boss has been gone so much and when he is here he is so busy I keep forgetting to ask him about being my new supervisor.

One of the other newbies here graduated in 2009 and finished his test before starting IDP - not sure if I agree with being able to do that. It basically says that if you can study for a test, you can pass the ARE and don't need any real life experience. Whatevs. Like I said...cynical!

  • btw, I won't be telling anyone when I start taking them either! I don't want to have to fess up if I fail. I get so much test anxiety that even talking about it is making my skin crawl :/

  • In all honesty I would be perfectly fine if I never ever took the tests.  I don't plan on ever owning my own firm and I just plain don't want to study for that many tests!!!  So yes, I am very crabby and cynical about the whole thing also.  I hate that it is SO expected.  It makes sense, but still bugs me.  I've come this far though I might as well go all the way...   blah blah blah.  I'm excited, nervous, scared, and impatient to get it done.

This is the website where I downloaded the application to test.

    http://www.aelslagid.state.mn.us/

I filled out the form, had it notarized (I know where you can find a nice convenient notary public.  E-mail me and I'll let you know:  tedandjenny @ hotmail dot com.)  Then I went on NCARB's website and told them to send my record to the above people.  Then I went on Iowa State's website and ordered a transcript be sent to that place too.  Ted ordered a transcipt, had it sent home, and they rejected it because it wasn't in a sealed envelope as he had taken it out of the envelope from ISU to send it to the testing board.  SO...make sure it's official and SEALED.  I just took the easy way out and had it sent straight to them.

I'm not 100% done with IDP, but close.  It's really hard getting experience on bidding and contracts in my tiny office.  It just doesn't come up too often.  That will be the last section I complete.  Too bad I can't move my few thousand extra CD hours into that section!!!

So people can apply to test and have zero hours documented?  That doesn't seem fair at ALL.  If they pass all the tests do they then have to complete all the hours before getting an official license?  I would guess that's the case because otherwise people just wouldn't do IDP.  :-)  It's SUCH a pain in the butt, ugh.  I was REALLY glad when they switched to online hour reporting.  I actually reported THREE YEARS of hours at one time.  And it was accepted the next day.  Easy peasy.  I confess though that I have NEVER met with my mentor.  I don't officially have one.  I gave my boss a name of someone at the beginning of all this but never followed through with making him my mentor.  Oops.  Embarrassed

So yeah....fun stuff.  I'm hesitating on signing up for my first test.  Tongue Tied

Aaaand I confess this got so long because I like the sound the keys make on our new keyboard.  #iamageek   Geeked

  • Thanks for the link. Now I feel like I should look into it, too.

Documents and Contracts were better at my old place, but I still didn't finish. I have yet to see a single AIA form at my new place - and based on the work I am doing with the client that I am, I doubt I will!

I remember the transcript being a pain when I started IDP. I had to actually go to Fargo and do it. My H was still living there at the time so it wasn't like I had to make a trip just for that. But still...

There are a few people at my office just on the cusp of taking the tests, so I think they will be forming study groups. If I take the plunge, I will let you know and you can head over and study with us :)

Where is your H at with all this?

Oooh count me in on a study group! :-)  DH is also approved to test but I don't think he's signed up for anything yet.  So....we're in the exact same place I guess.  :-)
