Thank you all for the restaurant/bar suggestions! DH and I now have a great list of new places to try.
I sent a list of a half-dozen or so to our friend and left it in his hands.
Well, we called him last night on our way downtown to ask what the plan was, and he said, "Well, I just thought we'd go to San Chez anyway and see what they can do for us."
Really? OK, REALLY? AT 6:30 on a Friday night, when there's a hockey game at 7, he thought we were going to find space for 8+ people with no notice?
San Chez, bless their hearts, was incredibly obliging. They said sure, they had room for 8 (why did they tell us no the two days before?!), as long as half our party was there when they sat us. After talking to our friend, he thought we should ask for 10 seats, in case more people showed up. He wasn't really sure, since only 9 or so people RSVPd. No problem. We had 5 people there, and were given two pushed-together tables in the upstairs. And then pretty soon we had 12 people. Then 17. I lost count at 23.
We had FOUR tables pushed together--the most they could fit--plus a "party extension" table a few feet away. It was crazy. But again, San Chez was great. Never once did any of the employees get snippy with us, and if other diners complained about our growing event, we never heard a word.
Our friend, who we now know is an extreme under-planner, was a freaking lucky man. Next time he asks for suggestions, we'll know that he means "Make a reservation, and make it for 3-4 times as many people as I tell you." Oh, and the people who didn't RSVP... man. They were not on my good side. Some of our friends who *did* RSVP were sat at the extension table until enough other folks left and they could join us. ![]()
Re: Update on "Need restaurant help" (LONG)
Glad to hear that it worked out and San Chez was so accommodating.
I have never been there, actually. (I think I may be the only one in town.)
Are you guys adventurous (adventursome? I never know the diff...) eaters? DH didn't think he'd like it, but now it's probably one of his favorites, and not just because they have a gluten-free menu.
If you want to try it "on the cheap" (well, cheaper) check in on FourSquare and you get a free tapas.

Great to hear that San Chez was able to take such good care of you guys. I haven't been there in such a long time - I need to get back soon.
Everybody say it with me... "GNO, GNO!"

GNO GNO
GRKaters- That's awesome that they were able to make it work. It sounds like you guys had an excellent night out.
I haven't been yet either...but that's another story for another time. If there's a GNO there, I'd love to go!
THAT I would love! But it would have to be a Sat night or sunday because of DH's work schedule.
GNO!!! I'm there.
I'm glad San Chez worked with the party. Phew. We're chronic underplanners too. At least he tried to get RVSP counts from friends, right?
I'd say that we're both relatively adventurous eaters. We like to try new restaurants, at least (this weekend it was Cinquo de Maya - yum). We went to a tapas restaurant once in DC and weren't impressed by the $$ and small portions. We left hungry. So, neither of us have been in a hurry to return to a tapas restaurant. I have heard great things about San Chez though.

Geesh, I hope people tipped well! The sad thing is that most of those non-rsvp'ers probably don't even realize or care how rude it was to just show up at a place like that. It's not exactly a bar or fast food joint.
I hardly ever remember to check over here anymore but a GNO sounds great, Saturday being better for me, unless earlier on Sunday.
