Blue?

My DS is 8 1/2 months old. Healthy baby. Granted, it's been freezing cold around here lately, but my husband and I have noticed that his hands and feet are usually cold even on warmer days. And, he sometimes has a blueish cast to his lips. He is sleeping, eating and going potty fine. I've looked online and it says that it can be due to coldness, poor circulation or something where his body doesn't get enough oxygen to his extremities. His last Dr. check-up was fine. Anybody have any experience with this?

Re: Blue?

  • What did his pedi say about your concern regarding the blueness specifically?
  • His last appointment was at the beginning of January for his 7 months. His next appointment is the beginning of March for 9 months. He didn't have any of this coldness/blue cast at the time of the 7 month visit so there was nothing to ask about. And, he is behaving and functioning as normal, so my husband said to ask the Dr. at the 9 month visit. But I feel worried.

I dont have any experience with this.  I just wanted to add that you could still call and ask dr, they dont charge you for it and they might be able to tell you something over the phone or they might tell you to come in for them to check.  I dont think I would wait until March.

  • I would see the doctor right away. I hope everything is well.

  • I would call the doctor, you never want to chance.  It isn't normal for anyone's hands and feet to be cold all the time and especially blue lips are not normal.  I'd worry too much, so just call.

  • You didn't say if the cold hands/feet are new, but babies often have cold hands and feet- they don't circulate blood as well as adults do.  That's why its important to keep them covered.
Since the blue cast to his lips is new, I would call and speak to someone in the pediatrician's office and see if they think you need to bring him in.  It never hurts to go and see the doctor if only to ease your mind.

  • The bluish cast around his mouth could be a symptom of a cardiac issue. Call the doctor.
  • I would make another appointment to be seen prior to your next, however - I was the same way as a baby.

Poor circulation issues (easily prone to frostbite as well), and slightly anemic was my diagnosis.

Either way,  I wouldnt be wasting my time Googling the "what if" - Id be in the doctor's office.

Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker ...here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide) and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart I carry your heart(I carry it in my heart)
  • Not to scare you to death, but what you're describing can be symptoms of a congenital heart defect.  Time to push your pedi for more tests or a referral to a pediatric cardiologist.  Many heart defects can't be detected on auscultation--an echo, CT, or X ray is required.

Yup- I am a phone triage nurse. If you called me with this question, I would suggest scheduling sooner than his next well child visit....March is right around the corner, if the appointment is next week, fine. But straight to the ER if things worsen sooner!
