Eat-In Month?

I see a lot of people talking about not eating out for an entire month & I think DH & I are going to give it a go for March (with the exception of our anniversary - that's celebrated at Ruth's Chris Wink).

Anyone else want to join? Share recipes? Meal plans? I've got this week planned pretty well & wanted to get a head start on next week.

  • We also decided that we're going to not eat out the whole month of March with the exception of using 2 gift cards/groupons that we have to Brucci's and Mellow Mushroom. 

    I'd definitely post our weekly menus if you start a thread each week, right now I'm still eating a little weird, but I might be a good resource if anyone is doing meatless mondays!

    Sunday - Gemelli with Broccoli Rabe, Bacon & Chick Peas (this was really yummy!)

    Monday - Beef with Broccoli (Old Campbell's recipe that my mom has)

    Tuesday - Ashlee's Buffalo Chick Pea Patties with oven fries

    Wednesday - Leftovers night

    Thursday - Red Beans & Rice

    Friday - Chicken Stir Fry

    Saturday - Something from my freezer (see below)

  • Here's my menu, in no particular order:

    Chickpea Masala Veggie Burgers with Garlic Naan, Broccoli Slaw Salad

    Baked Ziti, Tempeh "Sausage" Balls, Tossed Salad

    Mock Chipotle Veg Burrito Bowls (Rice, Black Beans, Sauteed Peppers, Corn/Tomato Salsa, Cheese, Guac) - we'll have this 2 times as all I really want anymore is Chipotle 

    Red Beans and Rice, Guacamole Salad

    Spicy Black Bean Patties, Sweet Potato Fries, Cauliflower for me, Salad for DH

     And I have some buttermilk so I'll probably make some pancakes and/or waffles to restock the freezer one night.

  • I wish I could cook a real meal every day but my work schedule just doesn't allow that. I usually only cook on Wednesday and Thursday. Every other night we do quick meals like Kashi frozen pizza, burgers on the George Foreman or sushi from Publix.

  • There is no way we could do this. DH works 5 nights a week so he needs to get out and do something on one of his nights off. I usually cook 4-5 nights a week, have leftovers one night and eat out one night.

    What's your work schedule like? I work 7:30 to 4:30 with 30-45 minute commutes each way. Add the gym to that & dinner doesn't get started til about 7 pm. It takes planning, but I'd much rather have a real meal than a frozen one.

  • MY DH works almost 7 nights a week, but he eats my dinner leftovers for lunch (i cook for 2-3), and packs a tuna and veggie sandwich or chicken salad, a piece of fruit and a dessert thing to eat right before or after practice. 

    It's just become habit, there's no reason he needs to stop a drive thru every night. It ads up fast, and it's much healthier.

  • Does this include lunches? I really would love to save some money and I know this is a big spending category, but I really, really love eating out. We only do it about 1 night a week.

    Ashlee - ITA! We're doing this for two reasons: budget & diet. When I was dieting before the wedding, we RARELY ate out & that's when I lost the most weight. Its crazy how unhealthy food out is!

    Ashlee - ITA! We're doing this for two reasons: budget & diet. When I was dieting before the wedding, we RARELY ate out & that's when I lost the most weight. Its crazy how unhealthy food out is!

    I know! Restaurants want to make things taste good, not be healthy... so when I eat out, even if I think I know what's in it, I'm sure my calorie count is always off.

    Not to say occasionally eating out is bad, but with the exhaustion and aversions, I've been on a crappy diet and need to get things back in line.

  • We are going out to eat tonight b/c we have friends in town. Tomorrow, we may be meeting up with our accountant to do our taxes. If we do that, we'll probably eat out with her. Wednesday is grilled porkchops and green beans. Thursday is baked chicken- not sure of the side yet. That's as far as I've gotten. DH has been in charge of food lately, cuz I've been feeling really sick.

I'm trying to get my schedule changed from 8-6:30 to 6-4:30 which would make a world of difference. Since I work long days I go to the gym on my lunch break so that saves some time.

    Restaurant food always has way more butter, oil, cheese & fat than anything I would make a home... so of COURSE it tastes good!

  • MarthaStewart.com has some good freezer meals. I made 3 from that last time I did batch cooking & they've all been yummy!

  • Another hardcore meal planner here.  Back when I worked, I was there from 8:30 to 5:30 then at the gym from 6 until 8 several days a week.  I just made those days crockpot or otherwise easy healthy dinner recipes.  Clean Eating magazine's websites has good ideas for simple, easy dinners.  Some of them are whack ingredients that I would never use, but I skip those or substitute normal stuff.  I think they even have menus planned out for you?

    I like eating out and even our eating out while I'm UE is just Chickfila or Five Guys, I'm not willing to give up my once a week "out" meal.
