Keeping dogs indoor or outdoors

We have a pug/beagle mix we adopted from town lake almost a year ago. He's always spent the days in the laundry room. In the evening he tends to spend a lot of time in the backyard. A lot of it is because Max (the dog) loves the kids and he's always trying to play with DS and DS is still a little too small and gets scared when Max tries to play with him. I know I can train Max to not do that and will do that eventually.

My question is right now that the weather is nice (not too cold or hot) should I leave him outside all day? Wouldn't he like that better than being in his room all day? If I do this for a few weeks would it then be hard to get him used to his room again? I don't want to leave him outside when it gets really hot.

Re: Keeping dogs indoor or outdoors

  • I'm not a huge fan of outdoors all day. Too many things can go wrong. Bit by a snake/scorpion/spider, something could fly into the yard that he eats, barks all day upsetting the neighbors, digging, etc. If your dog is anything like mine, he sleeps a majority of the day anyways, so inside or outside doesn't really phase him.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • As long as he has access to water and shade, he will be fine outside. Also, as long as you still let him in occassionally (assuming he is an indoor dog) while you guys are home, I wouldn't think he would have a hard time adjusting to being inside again. Also, after a week of rescuing my dogs EVERY SINGLE DAY, just be sure that he can't get out of the fence while in the backyard. If he can and does, it is way more stress than anyone needs to deal with.

  • I wouldn't keep him outdoors - like Leigha said, he could get into something dangerous (insects, etc.). Also, outdoor dogs tend to develop a lot of bad habits out of boredom like digging and non-stop barking.

This!!! Although I know I said he would be fine...I do prefer for my dog(s) to be inside too. My mother won't let me keep my dogs in the house and it is driving me insane. They have developed all sorts of awesome bad habits. My mother now has a hole in her backyard that my 85 lbs dog could probably disappear in. Indifferent

  • And if you're wanting to keep him outdoors because you think he's bored inside, try to get some interactive toys for him to play with in his room. We like Kongs and the Buster Cube.
  • Thanks for the advice guys. I'll continue to leave him inside the house during the day. He does get bored and we have a couple toys he likes indoors he just always tries to take them out even though he has toys outside.

Ditto this. Plus, I would be paranoid that the dog would get out and get hit by a car, etc.

  • my neighbors leave their dogs outside all day while they're at work.  they're lucky those dogs haven't "disappeared" under mysterious circumstances.  of course, i would never actually do anything to the dogs, but anytime i or dh try to do anything outside in our own backyard, it's non.stop.barking.  we have just stopped using the backyard really.  when the neighbors are home, they will yell at the dogs through the door or let them inside, but they're not home until later.  it's annoying to say the very least, and it's caused us to be resentful of their inconsiderate behavior and obnoxious dogs.  (i will now never own a dachshund.)  i don't know if your dog's a barker or not, but on behalf of your neighbors, please don't leave the dog outside when you're not home.
