Boss is very cranky...not sure what's up

My current boss has been in her position for less than 6 months.  Prior to that she was a coworker.  She has a cool personality and isn't the easiest to get along with. As a boss, she's kind of a nightmare.

I am the only one to report to her and I make the best of it but her cool demeaner is starting to wear on me.  I ask her point blank if there is a problem or issue she wants to discuss with me and she says no.  Last week she hung up on me.  She claimed she was in a bad mood because of another employee in our dept.  It's starting to feel like I work in a hostile environment.  I dread meetings with her because I don't know who I'm going to get: 1. cool but calm lady or 2. pissed off just trying to keep her cool lady.

Just had to vent.  Any tips on how to handle a cool fish for a boss are appreciated.

Re: Boss is very cranky...not sure what's up

  • I have a few bosses like this. Don't take it personally. She's your boss now, not your co-worker or friend. She could be acting cool for any number of reasons.

She may be trying to distance herself as a friend with you to stay professional. If she's a new manager managing peers, that's a difficult transition. She may be having problems with someone else. She obv can't disclose that to you, and she's clearly not used to having to deal with things like that and may not be acting professionally. She may be having issues with her superiors or other pressures now being "the boss". I know one of my bosses gets really weird when there are other things going on within the organization that he can't share (financial performance, stress about how we're going to meet numbers, cutting expenses (i.e., staff), any number of things). OR she could be having personal problems and wants to keep it professional.

You've asked if there's anything she wants to address with you. She's said no,  you've done all that you can. Keep it professional.

I have to echo Katarczyna and say its probably her just trying to adjust to her position and the stresses from above and distancing herself since she once was your coworker. That transition is difficult sometimes and the other pressures that may not have been expected will exhibit themselves differently. There is technically a lead over me and he acts the same way, but I usually just blow it off and ignore the attitude.

    Good luck!
