Super excited! (NYC Trip)

My aunt and I are going to NYC at the end of March and we talked basics but other than flights, nothing else had been booked yet.

She just called to tell me she got us tickets to the Broadway show I want to see (Wonderland) and that we're staying at the Waldorf!  I'm even more excited now than I was before.

Other than that, we have a couple days to fill.  I have a bunch of touristy standards that I want to get to - Wall Street, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, Top of the Rock, and - of course - the Today Show.

Have you ever been?  What's your favorite thing to do in NYC?  Any recommendations?

Re: Super excited! (NYC Trip)

  • The Waldorf is AMAZING!!  The lobby has a dress code!  I think that was one of the most comfortable beds I have EVER slept in!!!  I saw Juliette Lewis in the lobby there, that was kind of fun.  AND the room service peanut butter and jelly sandwich was $12!!

My architecture class went to NYC in college and they put us up at the West Side YMCA.  It was.........gross to put it mildly.  6 of us got together and said we'd go stay somewhere else (and pay for it).  We called a hotel reservation hotline and ended up being quoted $150 a night for what my friend wrote down as "Historia".  Once I figured out where she actually meant we jumped on the deal!  Since there were 6 of us we requested an extra cot and somehow got everyone crammed in the room.  Totally against the rules but....we were poor college students.  :-)  I *think* our room was normally $500 a night.  It's a beautiful hotel!

eta:  We spent a lot of our time at the site where our project was based that semester so we didn't see a ton.  AND, it was just a few days after my grandma had died and I was getting a cold so it was actually a miserable trip for me (the only good thing was staying at the Waldorf.)  I wish I could give you more recommendations of stuff to do.  I need to go back under better circumstances and give NYC a second chance.

  • That's a great deal, Kiz!  What does that work out to be, like $25pp?!

Sorry the rest of your trip was such a bummer.

  • I *love* NYC. My best friend lives there, so I go fairly often. Check out my facebook albums for photos!

    My favorite things:
Ride the Staten Island Ferry at night. You can stand on the back of the boat and get a great view of downtown Manhattan - and it's slow enough you can take a decent low-light, long exposure hand held photo of the skyline with the Brooklyn Bridge off to the side.
Get a canolli at Cafe Palermo (Little Italy, Mulberry Street). They fill the canollis to order - so they are crunchy on the outside (instead of soggy if they've been sitting filled all day) and they are basically amazing. We actually have made a tradition out of getting a canolli to go and eating it while on the Staten Island Ferry.. :)
Top of the Rock is my favorite observation deck - but that or the Empire State Building is a must. Again - if you can swing it - go right before it starts to get dark. Stay up there for an hour - so you can see the city in the light, and then as it changes to night. It's beautiful and you can get some fantastic photos.
Literary Lane, Strawberry Fields, Alice in Wonderland and the Bethesda Fountain are my favorite parts of Central Park. March might be too early for the motorized sailboat rentals (at the man-made pond near Alice) but it's always fun to watch them if they are racing.
The New York Transit Museum is a really cool experience. I learned a lot about the planning and building of the subways and bridges, plus they have old subway cars that you can go in. It's not an air conditioned museum (at least not the 'downtown' Brooklyn location isn't) so it's a better place to go in cooler weather - not summertime.
MoMA often has some cool exhibits. If you want to venture into Queens, you could go to MoMA's PS1 location - it's in old Public School building number 1 - but they always have special events (we were there when they had an outdoor installation - fiberglass tubes that misted water - and a monster techno dance party during the day.)
Prospect Park - in Brooklyn - is great with lots of walking paths and relaxing spots.
The Highline Park which runs through several neighborhoods is really fantastic. One of Joe's favorite spots in the city.

For restaurants ... The Half King in Chelsea (?) is fantastic, and the owner is friends with a few movie/tv people (Drew Barrymore and her producer/partner - can't recall her name but she's married to Jimmy Fallon) and a few movies have had shots filmed in the restaurant. The food is awesome though - and the atmosphere is fun and loungey. One of my favorite drinking bars is Bar Nine - which is near Time's Square in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. My BFF has a good friend that used to work there, we know the manager Kieran well, and they always have live music. Bar food there is fine but nothing special. We go out to a lot of places in Brooklyn because that is where my BFF lives - Bar Toto, Chevella, Korzo are a few.

I am so jealous.. my next trip to NYC won't be until November unless I win the lottery... but I want to go now!

  • The Waldorf is awesome!  My BF and I stayed there in August of 2009.  It's in a great location!  Serendipity, a famous restaurant (get a frozen hot chocolate!), is only like a 10 min walk north of there.

Do Top of the Rock during the day and the Empire State building at night.  Lines at the Empire are horrendous during the day.

If you are doing the Statue of Liberty try and get tickets for the crown now, definitely worth the climb up the steps, though if you are claustrophobic you probably won't like it.

Trattoria Trecolori is where we ate before our Broadway show (Wicked) and it was amazing, it's a block or so off of Times Square.

The Brooklyn Bridge is fun to walk across and get pictures of the skyline.

We also ate at Peter Luger's- super famous restaurant and they have to die for porterhouse steaks.

Sorry the rest of your trip was such a bummer.

It ended up being the same price-per-night as the disgusting West Side YMCA which was full of cockroaches, creepy guys roaming the halls, and piss.  I can't believe they booked us there.  And I can't believe the other people stayed there. I think a lot of them skipped most of our class time and were just trashed the whole time.  I would have to be trashed to sleep there... It was basically a glorified homeless shelter.

  • We are going to NYC April 7-10. We're going to see the Twins play the Yankees the day our flight arrives...very excited for that! My boyfriend's cousin just landed a role in the Broadway musical "American Idiot" so we'll be seeing that as well. I'm happy you posted this, it gives me ideas on what to do for my first time in NYC. My boyfriend and his family have been there once before, so it will be nice to have their input on the subway, restaurants, and whatnot.

Question - What kind of clothing are you bringing? I'm not sure what the weather is like at the beginning of April. I have a feeling it could be really cool and rainy or warm and sunny.
