The end to my weekend was just as crazy as the beginning (PIP)

I for one am SO happy the weekend is over. Between crazy people, sleep-flailing, the lost toddler running around by the road (which I never heard anything else about & it wasn't on the news, so I'm guessing they figured it out), and this latest piece of nonsense, I'm worn out on all the weekend shenanigans.

Last night at about 1 a.m., our doorbell rang. Clinton was dead to the world, but I'm a terrible sleeper & hadn't fallen asleep yet, so I was snuggled up in bed watching "Sex & the City" on my iPod. The doorbell scared the CRAP out of me! Clinton is such a heavy sleeper that he didn't even hear it, so I had to shake him & wake him up because there was NO way I was going to the door alone in the middle of the night.

It turned out it was one of the old ladies across the hall. She had been taking their dog outside to go to the bathroom & she heard a weird noise & smell coming from the apartment right next to mine, and was convinced there was a fire. I heard the noise, and it was kind of a crackley sound like a fire, but I didn't smell smoke or anything. It smelled more like burning plastic. I've mentioned before that the guy who lives there works out of town & is hardly ever there, so she was concerned. I don't remember the last time I even saw this guy, but the woman across the hall is super nosy & can tell you at all times whether someone is around or not. She said he hadn't been there in three or four days & knew he wasn't there now. Once she had all of us out in the hall, she asked me to use my cell phone to call 911 & tell them she thought there was a fire. They said they'd send a fire truck & we should call the property manager to bring a key & all go outside just in case.

So we all went out to the parking lot & waited. It only took a couple minutes for the firetruck to get there. They obviously weren't worried anyone's life was in immediate danger b/c they said people could come back into the building & go back to bed if they wanted. They decided to wait a couple minutes for the property manager to arrive with the key, and try to figure out the problem from outside the apartment. They were listening in vents, through windows, and through my living room wall. They had a little beeping machine & an axe, and I was almost hoping they'd have to chop the door, because when in my life am I ever going to get to see that?! Probably never. It was super interesting.

Once the key got here, they were able to get through the door & found that there was a small gas leak from the guy's stove & it was messing up the water heater in the guy's closet. That probably has something to do with the whole building not having hot water since last weekend (lukewarm at best). They stopped the stove leak & determined that it wasn't causing a danger to the rest of the building, so I Clinton & I went back in our own apartment so we wouldn't be in the way. The whole thing took about an hour & ended up not being nearly dramatic as it could have been, but it followed with the theme of the rest of my weekend: My apartment and all the people in it are crazytown.

Anyway, I stayed out of the way but I thought the whole thing was super interesting, so I turned the shutter sound off my phone, stood back, zoomed in, and snapped a couple pictures.

So that's the end of my weekend. In a span of about 7 hours, I had to answer questions for police officers and fireman in two different, unrelated incidents. Next thing you know, there's going to be a rabid mountain lion on the loose, or an outbreak of cholera or something. It was an interesting few days for sure, but I'm VERY much looking forward to things being calm around here. Tonight I'm making an early dinner, laying on my couch, watching "The Bachelor," and not moving. Keep your fingers crossed that we can relax!

  • wow Sara...that is a crazy amount of events happening all at once.  I am so happy that it was nothing really serious (also glad with a gas leak that the nosey lady next door stuck her nose into it).   Could have been worse that just the drama.   Enjoy your relaxing night and I will cross my fingers that it is quiet

  • Glad it wasn't anything too serious. Hope you catch up on your sleep and things settle down.

The XTerra? That's mine! I've had her for 7 years. Her name is Big Red. :)

And I was a little disappointed in the lack of fireman sexiness. Mostly they were like 10 years older than me & seemed kind of cranky that they were having to deal with that in the middle of the night. Not that I blame them. If there was a hot fireman, I would have made sure I got some good pictures. :-P

Cool!  Ours is kind of a tan colour.

I once had to call the fire department because our Carbon Monoxide detector was going off. One older man and two women showed up Sad

  • Okay, I do hope you have a much calmer week ahead of you, but can I just say that your story cracked me up?  I honestly was sitting here laughing at the end of it (which obviously would not have been the case if it were more serious/someone had been injured).  I just can't imagine making this stuff up, and all the detail you added just made it sound more hilarious to me.  At least you have some interesting stories to share! :-)

  • I lurk... I can't help myself,

OMG, Clinton didn't wake up!!! Why did you ever get married!!

  • Sara, Just want to say that we are into our third day of the week and I hope you don't have any naked girls in your room or firemen banging on the doors with axes.  I hope you have an uneventful week :-)
