Poll on Organic Food....

Do you buy organic food?  If so what items?  Or do you only strictly eat organic food?

Just curious!

Re: Poll on Organic Food....

  • The only thing that I am super picky on is my chicken.  So basically that is the only thing I buy that is organic.

I don't eat a lot of red meat but if I do I don't mind if it's non-organic.  And i feel the same way about pork.  I don't mind.....

Veggies and anything else, I don't care either.

Besides, I don't have the money to eat exclusively organic!  $10 a pound for chicken is my only splurge!!

  • I have never bought anything organic...never.  I'm not against it or anything, honestly I've just not really given it any thought.
  • I do! I agree it is quite expensive though so sometimes I have to compromise. I do buy only organic meats though (chicken and red meat, I don't really ever eat pork) and eggs.

I found that my local Publix has a lot of organic options for snack type items that are very reasonably priced so I buy those a lot. I also try to buy organic produce as much as possible, but sometimes it's just too expensive so I buy regular. I also will to buy the items marked as 100% organic vs. those made with "organic ingredients," if available.

ETA: I also only buy organic milk and yogurt.

  • I buy some organic, i would say maybe 30%?  We have a nice farmers market close to us so I buy most of our produce there, but when I don't I try to buy organic.  Meat is half organic I would say?  Bj's has BL/SL chicken breasts prepacked in packs of 2.  They are a little bit more than the Purdue, but I think its like $2.49 vs. $3.99.  I try to go to whole foods once a month or so and usually buy a couple pieces of meat when I am there.  I only buy organic milk and eggs, but cheese yogurt, etc. I buy whatever.

  • I don't. Mostly because of a show that I watched.

It is impossible to keep rodents and bugs out of food processing/packaging plants. Because it is literally impossible, the FDA allows a certain percentage of hair, feces, etc to be in food. Organic facilities are not able to be sterilized and cleaned the way that non organic facilities are. The whole thought of organic food just grosses me out.

And the thought of pesticides and hormones and other chemicals added to food doesn't gross you out? I have bought lots of organic vegetables and have never found any bugs in them. Organic farms use other methods to reduce pests, they just don't use heavy duty pesticides non-organic farming does.

Clearly, you have not seen a modern day slaughter house. I don't want to gross anyone out, but I think you should do some research on that and then tell me you are not "grossed out." (and I'm not talking about the actual act of slaughtering, I'm talking about animal's diet and their conditions and all the crap that is added to meats to make it sanitary)

I know most people could care less where their food comes from and organic isn't for everyone. But to say that organic foods are not sanitary is just ridiculous IMHO. If anything, organic farmers have to be more vigilant than non-organic farmers because of the organic certification.

  • I buy organic milk and cage free eggs. I would love to buy organic produce, but have a hard time spending the money unless it's on sale. I also buy Publix Greenwise ground beef and Perdue Fit n Easy chicken breasts, neither are organic, but both are supposedly hormone free and have no added antibiotics.

If money wasn't an issue, I'd try to go all organic with my at home food. I'd still eat out though at non-organic restaurants.

  • I buy some organics, but not all. I prefer to buy my vegetables from a produce market that carries a large amount of local produce but not organic. Some of our milk is organic, but we go through about 3 gallons a week (which split up between regular milk, soy or almond milk and sometimes coconut milk) so of that, it's not all organic. Most of my other dairy products (cheese, sour cream, cottage cheese) are usually not. We eat very little meat, so some of it is organic, but not always. I only buy wild caught seafood. My grains and legumes I buy from the bulk bins from a natural grocer so they are always organic. If I had unlimited money to spend on groceries everything would be organic, but it's not so I try to be sensible about what is and isn't.

  • I buy organics for the things DD eats most - bananas, grapes, carrots, MILK, yogurt and snacks.  Otherwise, I just buy whatever.

  • I buy organic and local whenever possible.  I live in a place where there's easy access to an amazing farmer's market so it's pretty easy.  For grocery stores, I only shop at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods so that makes it easy too.  I don't like all the hormones, pesticides, and preservatives in food these days and have trained myself how to buy the best possible for the least amount of money.
