how do you combat eating when you're bored?

please don't say will power, that's an ongoing struggle for me.

i know i'm not hungry, i just had lunch, but i'm bored and want to eat. any tips, suggestions for avoiding the boredom snacking?

tia!

Re: how do you combat eating when you're bored?

  • Try to keep yourself busy...

Cleaning/organizing/etc. If you're at work, write emails to people, make to do lists, etc.

This is an issue for me right now, also.

And I have no will power these days, either. Totally not like me, I hate it.

  • That's a huge issue for me too. Eric suggested sunflower seeds. You're still eating, but it's so much expenditure of energy that it almost doesn't matter.
  • Drinking something always helps me, even if it's just a glass of water.
  • I wouldn't leave snacks in my desk drawer or bring cash for the vending machines so I was just stuck without anything to eat.

At home, I try to limit the snacks in my house.  I try and buy snacks for DH that I can't stand so I don't eat them.

The above advice is coming from someone who had a visitor leave us a chocolate cake this past weekend.  I ate half the cake.

I'm up 3lbs from my last Dr's appt.  I don't think she is going to be happy with me.  I'm going to hope I can say I'm retaining water.

  • Um, I haven't figured this out yet.  But, if I keep myself  busy, I'm less likely to snack.  Like Jackie said.

    Sorry, I got nothing.

Same here. I suck at not eating when I'm bored. It starts with 2nd breakfast and doesn't end until I'm at home and I have no food to eat after dinner.

  • This is the worst part of working from home. you have an entire kitchen easily accessible.

It's going to be the death of me.

My mom handles it great by planning scheduled snacks. Pistachios, cheese, veggies and hummus. She packs her lunch and packs her snacks. That's how she handles portion control (literally 25 pistachios), and is always content because she knows a snack is coming.

  • I'm snacking now  Embarrassed  on some pretzel sticks.  The problem for me is by 2ish (its 2:40 now) I do get hungry, so I gotta snack on something and fruit just doesn't cut it for me.
  • I chew gum. When I am chewing it to avoid eating I get the citrus type flavors instead of the mind. Right now I have the Trident in the Orange container. I didn't love it at first, but it really has helped with not finding other snacks.

This is what I do too. At first I felt a little OCD when I was measuring out pretzels or raisins, but it really does help me. Plus I keep little baggies of snacks in my desk and it makes me less likely to grab something from the vending machine.

I do this when I'm actually being "good." I just haven't had to be good in over a year.

  • I don't take any "extra" food with me to work.  I plan my meals and snacks and do my best to eat them at a specific time every day.  I eat/drink breakfast on the way to work.  Snack after my 2nd group of kids.  Lunch, snack during tutoring or on my way home.  Dinner.

I ALWAYS have water nearby.  It helps when I'm hungry.  If I'm home and I can't stand it - I eat a pickle.

I also don't keep stuff in my house that I'll eat when I'm bored.  We have no frozen dinner or anything "quick" like mac and cheese to cook because I'll eat it.

I should also mention I just started weight watchers again so, I'm very planned and meticulous with my portions.

Also, when you do eat or have a snack - choose something that is filling and not "empty calories" like things with fiber.  They last longer and help curb cravings.  I know cravings aren't the issue but I try to think in my head, "ok, I just ate - I'm not hungry - I'm just thirsy...yeah, that's it!"

It doesn't always work but eventually it goes away and I get busy doing something else.

Sono showed no baby and teeny tiny sac. Waiting to M/C naturally.

  • When I was working at the office I brought specific snacks for "snack time". String cheese, trail mix and fruit/jello cups.

Or just eat celery. You burn more calories eating it then even one stalk contains.

I do this at work also.

But I have extra stuff these days in case I get hungrier...

  • When I'm not hungry but feel snacky, I get a drink with a straw. Even if it's just ice water, it satisfies my bored-need-to-do-something-with-my-mouth thing.
