Anyone here have a child with learning disabilities?

Just asking because I have found no boards anywhere on the web for parents that are dealing with this.

I have checked out some great books and some mediocre sites in my need to find information and support through this crazy rollercoaster.

If you have a kiddo going through any sort of IEP what have you done to educate yourself and what support have you found?  I am a single mom with parents that have their own problems and friends that love me and my dd but have no idea what it's like so I don't want to even talk about it with them... but I would love to chat with someone going through this...

Thanks!

Re: Anyone here have a child with learning disabilities?

  • There's a special needs board on the bump. My ss has been diagnosed with bipolar and ADHD. He has an IEP and is a contained class where he can get more individualized attention. PM me if you have any other questions.

  • My dd is in the 4th grade and when I went on the special needs board it seemed like it was geared toward younger kiddos.  I may just have to start one myself.  :)
  • I'm a 4th grade ESE inclusion teacher....Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
  • You might find more replies on the "school aged children" board on thebump.

  • It is mostly younger kids there, but I hand out and answer questions about older kids as needed. I also check the School Aged Board, but it gets way less traffic.

    I answered your post there.

  • I have a son who is dyslexic and ADHD. It has been a horrible challenge just dealing with the school system. I understand what you mean about there not being a ton of info out there especially as the kids get a little older. I can also sypathize with not having a lot of friends and family to discuss it with. It seems like everyone else around us has very gifted children while mine struggle. They just don't understand.

Our Dr. recommended a book called "Reading David ". It helped me in a lot of ways. It was specifically about her son that hs dyslexia but I think there are a lot of take aways for any parent and child working through learning disabilities. It made very aware and sypathetic to my son's school experience (which has been very different than mine) and has helped me feel like I am not alone.

  • I am a high school sped teacher.  I work with LD and BD/ED students as well as students with autism.  Feel free to PM if you have any questions.  =)
  • I am 29 years of age and had an IEP all my life during school.  It is so hard to really make anyone understand what a day is like for a child with a LD in school . I went to school for Sped teaching because I wanted to help kids and make sure they didn't go through the same pain i did when I was there age.  Parents can help teachers can help but it will never take it away and the understanding is maybe so so . I live with this everyday of my life. If you were to meet me you would have no idea of my LD I have learned to live in the world and work around the problem. Not every child can do that. I think the best advice i can give you is to make sure you follow your child every step of the way in school and fight for what he or she needs. IEP's can be a lot to look at for the first time so read a little at a time ! Teach him/her as they get older to be an advocate for their own education !  Having your child know his /her rights is power !  Try to get them in the best school you can when it comes to Spec ed ! It will make a difference in the education . Stay positive and understand school will be hard for your child let them know you see how hard they are working. Give them plenty of breaks during long school work. Hope this helps you. Please understand that I am the person I am today because I have taken control of my LD . My parents were by my side with school and i got that paper from WCU !  Never let them give up on there dreams they will get it ! It might take longer but if there is a will there is a way !
