The novel "Room"...I want to talk about it. *Warning, may contain spoilers*

Thanks to Christie being so generous, I just finished the book "Room" and I am not sure how I feel about it.  I loved the first half but was disappointed with the second half.  Anyone care to discuss the book?  I think I remember reading that several of you have read it.

  • Since I have obviously read it I can throw some ideas in.

It got me thinking about how a child would think if all they ever knew were the four walls that surrounded them.  To be born and raised until the age of 5 without ever leaving those four walls would give someone an outlook that we could only imagine.  I think the author did a good job of trying to capture that POV.  I thought the author used some interesting techniques like capitalizing certain items that were everything to the boy.

For me it was a quick read which is positive and negative.  It was interesting enough that I kept reading it at every chance I got so that was a good thing.  I think though I was expecting something with a little more depth to it so I was disappointed in that aspect.

  • I think I was expecting something a bit more in depth too.  I wanted to finish the book and go "wow..." but instead I just said, "well, that's done" lol.  Don't get me wrong, I liked it and read it every chance I got, but I feel like the climax happened too early in the book and the second half didn't really add anything to the story.

I feel like the author left a lot of questions unanswered.  I also didn't like how certain characters seemed so harsh, like the grandmother and even Ma towards the end.  She loved that little boy so much and then didn't really seem to care at all.

I disagree. Ma spent all of her energy while they were in room making sure Jack was safe - I don't think she even comprehended just how traumatic an experience she was enduring.  She was just surviving and desperately trying to figure out a way to get them out. And then when she was finally free of Old Nick, she had to deal with lawyers and reporters and relive all of that trauma over and over. Plus, she had to face the fact that life hadn't stopped while she was held hostage - her friends had grown up and moved on, her parents had divorced, her brother was no longer a teenager. No one ever thought they'd see her again.  And then she had  to deal with Jack, who had no idea what life was like outside of room.  I think her breakdown was completely understandable, and I don't think the shift in attitude was any sort of indication that she stopped caring about him. I think she was just trying to find a way to deal with the terrible thing that happened to her.

And as for the grandmother, she was definitely harsh.  But I don't think the average person would be able to comprehend someone not knowing that rain won't hurt you.  Or that outside is not tv.  All of the characters were going through traumatic experiences on some level, and I guess I don't fault the grandmother for not behaving like a model grandmother.

I really loved this book (in case you couldn't tell).  I thought the author did a really good job of slowly revealing just how terrifying the situation they were in really was.  When I started reading, I thought the child-as-narrator was going to be annoying.  But in the end, I thought it was really effective.

  • I do agree with you, I think Ma's behavior was acceptable for what she had went through.  I think it was the first time in many years that she could focus on what happened to her rather than making sure nothing is going to happen to Jack.

I still can't get past the grandmom though; I understand she's been through a lot as well, but you have this vulnerable little boy who needs patience, love, and understanding, and I feel like her attitude was that she just didn't want to deal with it.

I also felt like I was going to find the child narration annoying but after a few pages, I started reading it smoothly and really thought it was a neat point of view.  I love love love the last sentense in the book.

I agree with this point too.  I didn't think I was going to enjoy having the kid tell the story, but it worked.  I don't think the book could have worked any other way.
