State College/Bellefonte Gals :) Need Help!

DH just found out that he'll be relocating for work in 3-4 weeks to the SC area.  EEK!  We live in southern MD, and though we share a border - I know NOTHING about your state!  I'm having trouble finding rental websites (we're only going to be there 18 months +/-).  Any suggestions of areas to focus on/refrain from would be appreciated!

Thanks!

  • Wow, that's a quick time to move, but you'll be fine! I moved here about 4 years ago and I really love this area, so I hope you will too! There really isn't many areas to avoid here...everything is fairly safe, etc. That being said apartments in State College are generally more expensive than Bellefonte. The other thing is downtown State College is mostly student housing, so unless you aren't bothered by loud, drunk, nights I would avoid right downtown. Toftrees is popular with younger professionals, although it can be pricey. The Centre Daily Times is the local paper, so you can check their website for the classifieds. When we lived in Bellefonte we rented from Jabco Realty Management, they were okay...some of their properties are a little questionable, but if you actually go and look at the place you'll be able to tell for yourself. I haven't had to look at apartments in a few years, so I just tried googling Toftrees apartments and that gave me quite a few rental companies. If you have any more questions feel free to ask!! And welcome (soon) to the area!

  • My husband and I have been in SC for 10 years this summer, and really enjoy the area. We've lived in nearly every neighborhood (we're perma-renters!) and some are better than others, for simple proximity to shopping and as the other person said, to stay away from students/parties/etc.

We have had good luck using craigslist.org, but of course be careful - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I rented from Park Forest Enterprises (www.rentpfe.com) and they're a trustworthy rental agency, and I believe they'll even do month-to-month leases. Before we married, my husband rented from Stone Glenn apartments - it's about 10 minutes outside downtown State College, but it's very secure, private, and has a lot of amenities making it one of the nicer complexes in town.

State College is a lovely area; very family oriented and friendly. I hope you and your husband enjoy it as much as we do!

  • I will agree with all the advice you have been given so far...if you have a rental that you are interested in, you could link it here and I could give you some feed back...

(At one time I was a student, then a volunteer firefighter in this area, now just a transplanted "local"...so I may be able to give you some insight...)

On another note -- I'm glad to see some state college girls here-- I don't know if I ever saw any others!

  • I don't know if this is way late to respond or if you will still check (I haven't been around much latley). I would say if you are going to look in State College make sure the landlords/rental agency knows you aren't students. DH and I had a townhouse through Associated Reality, who a lot of people don't like but we didn't have any problems with them, and I think at first they thought we were students and when they figured out we were out of school/working they were a lot nicer.

Bellefonte is a lot less expensive then State College, you can get a lot more for your money. There is also Boalsburg which is nice.

I grew up in State College and live in Bellefonte now so if you have any questions I would be happy to help.
