Ovarian Cysts during pregnancy?

Does anyone have any experience with ovarian cysts during pregnancy? I had my first ultrasound last week (healthy 8 week old baby with HB of 167) and the doctor found a 5-6 cm cyst on one of my ovaries. She asked if I had a history of these, but I had no idea because this was my first ultrasound. She said as long as it wasn't bothering me that I didn't need to worry and we'd just keep an eye on it.

Of course now I am starting to feel twinges in my low abdomen on the left side. It is occasionally painful. I am wondering if it's in my head or if it could actually be from the cyst. I don't think anything can be done at this point, but just trying to get an idea of if I should be worried or not. Thanks ladies!

Re: Ovarian Cysts during pregnancy?

  • My friend is pregnant, was bleeding really bad and went to the ER. They found a pretty large cycst. They are going to monitor it and as long as it doesn't grow the doctor isn't concern. HTH!

  • Sorry, no experience with this, but let us know how you make out. Did you ask about this on the bump? I'm sure someone over there will have some helpful insight.

  • I had one at my first US as well. My doctor told me that that was side side Aiden's egg came form and that it should clear up. It never bothered me though.

  • I should probably ask on the bump, but am trying to stay away from the first tri boards :-) The doctor made it sound like small cysts are common in pregnancy, but that when they're over 5cm they're a bit more concerning. She said "We normally like to avoid surgery because of the pregnancy" which of course freaked me out.

  • I'm sure the Dr is right & it's nothing to worry about, but geez, they really know how to stress you out huh? I'm sure it'll be fine.

  • You might be experiencing round ligament pain which is common.  It's kind of a sharp pinching feeling when you get up, switch positions or move suddenly.  It occurs in your lower abdomen and it's your uterus expanding (growing pains so to speak).  Definitely ask the dr. about it.
  • Did they mention that it could have been a corpus litum cyst?

From Mayo Clinic: Corpus luteum cyst. When LH does surge and your egg is released, the ruptured follicle begins producing large quantities of estrogen and progesterone in preparation for conception. This changed follicle is now called the corpus luteum. Sometimes, however, the escape opening of the egg seals off and fluid accumulates inside the follicle, causing the corpus luteum to expand into a cyst.

I have "chocolate chip" ovaries (which means lots of cysts) and they can be VERY painful. So what you could be feeling is the cyst or the round ligament pain as mentioned above

I have had many LARGE ovarian cysts and never had surgery for them. It is pointless really, they just grow back. I haven't had one in several years and luckily not one while I have been pregnant.

I knew a girl at an old job who was pregnant and had a large cyst and remember her saying how uncomfortable it was but not that there was any concern.

Were you on BC before TTC? BC will keep cysts from growing, which is why you may have never noticed pain from them before. I was allergic to every kind of BC that they put me on so I ended up just dealing with the pain every time that one of them ruptured. I think that the pain I receive daily from having ovarian cysts is why I am not considering the pains I feel now, this late in my pregnancy, uncomfortable.
