NOTD!

I'm NOTD, I think! I didn't participate the last time around so I am eager to answer questions.

I should be around a good chunk of the day; I don't have any meetings but I had yesterday off so I could have a bunch to things to take care of today. But I will be making frequent trips back to my computer to check for questions. Ask away!

    Where is your next vacation?

Nothing is planned right now. We found out last week that a friend of DH's is getting married in FL in May. DH has been away on business so we haven't had a chance to sit down and talk about whether we can afford to go. If we do I want to spend more time down there and make it worth while. Other than maybe a mini-vacation here or there we probably won't go on anymore big vacations before we TTC (since we're also finishing the basement and that's a big chunk of money).

I know you just did Hawaii...if you were going back would you stay at the same place? Where did you stay while you were there?

On Kauai we stayed at the Waipouli Beach Resort. I really liked that hotel. The pool area was gorgeous and we loved going in the hot tubs at night after dinner. The only down side was that you couldn't swim on the ocean there, but the beach was practically deserted and it was so quiet and relaxing. It is on the east side so it was easy to access with the north and southern points of the island without having a long drive. I'd definitely stay there again.

On the Big Island we stayed at the Keauhou Beach Resort. I liked this one too but not as much as the other. It was located on the west side on a road with a lot of hotels and there were lots of shops/restaurants at the far end of the road. But the speed limit on the road was so slow and it always seemed to take forever to get to. The one great thing it had was great snorkeling. There was a reef that went right in front of the hotel and just next door was a public beach. You were literally swimming with the fish because it was so shallow. The Big Island has many different landscapes so I'd probably stay in another part of the island if we were to go back.

Are your kitties getting along any better?

Yes. There aren't really physically fighting anymore (at least while I'm home) but Bella is still hissing now and then, you know when Milo looks at her the wrong way, or he sniffs her for too long. Confused

    imagejujubaybee:
How is the basement remodel coming along?

It is coming along slowly. We (and by we I mean Mark) would have all the framing done by last week but DH went out of town to work expectantly so he wasn't about to get the fireplace in. But soon (the beginning of next month) we will have the plumber in to run the gas line for the fireplace and get the electrician in to run all the wiring and lighting.

    imagejujubaybee:
Favorite thing about where you live?

Definitely the four seasons. And being close to a lot of family and friends (since I grew up a 1/2 hour from where we live and DH is only an 1 hour 1/2 from his home town).

    imagejujubaybee:
Have you ever lived in another state?

Nope. Born, raised, and went to college all in MA.

    imagejujubaybee:
What is your favorite go to meal to make? (recipe?)

One of my favs is really simple and yummy. It is penne in vodka sauce with feta cheese. I don't like feta alone but it starts great with the vodka sauce. We usually add chicken (pan fried), but you can add anything you want to it. I've added broccoli too and it came out great. The Cake Boss now has his own cooking show (Kitchen Boss) and he made a vodka sauce from scratch. I grabbed the recipe from the TLC website and I'm looking forward to trying it out!

do you like your job? what is your career goal?

I do like my job. I love being in the lab (research) and get along great with my coworkers. I'm the lab manager so I do a bunch of different things which helps keep my job from getting boring.

I've loved genetics since my first Punnett Square. Right now I work in a cancer lab, which I really like. I could see myself continuing in lymphoma/leukemia, or potentially moving to pancreatic cancer (which FIL passed away from). I'd also like to work with genetic diseases. I really enjoy working in academia, but the pay isn't great and the commute is far. I think eventually I will make the jump to industry and probably get more away from lab manager type roll to full-time researcher.

    imagecookiemonster03:
if you had to move at least 500 mile away, where would you go? assume COL and salaries are the same.

Definitely California. Or somewhere on the west coast.

  • imagemarytini:
Do you get any magazine subscriptions?

    No.

    imagemarytini:
What are your must watch TV shows?

I get sucked into a lot of reality TV like the Bachelor, AI, DWTS. I can't help it, haha. For actual (current) shows I watch HIMYM, Castle, and BBT. Some old favorites are mine are Scrubs and Friends. I always catch reruns. I've also been watching the Food Network a lot. I like the competition shows (Worst Cooks, Next Iron Chef) and love Chopped and Cupcakes Wars.

I watch a lot of TV. Embarrassed

    imagemarytini:
What was the last movie you saw in the theater? How many stars would you give the movie (out of 5)?

No Strings Attached. I'd give it a solid 3. It was really funny, but like any chick-flick, very predictable.

    imagemarytini:
You are stranded on a deserted island. What 5 things would you want with you (not to escape, but for comfort/entertaiment/sanity)?

DH, my kitties (counting as 2), a computer, and internet.

    imagemarytini:
If I gave you $1000 right now to spend on yourself, what would you do with it?

I'd probably get some new outfits.

    imagemarytini:
Now you have to donate it to charity or use it for good. What do you do with it?

I'd give it to my childhood church (and/or the orphanage in Honduras they sponsor).

What should we not miss when we go the BI in April? Any restaurants you recommend?

Definitely go to the volcano and the Black Sand Beach. Those are kind of obvious. We went to this park of Hawaiian heritage and I liked it a lot (see blog). Try to get over to the Hilo side of the island. Kasi said there were amazing waterfalls over there. Also, there are some great lookout points from the northern "stem". We didn't find any "amazing you have to go here" type restaurants. But we're also kind of picky and like simple things.

Here is my blog entry about the BI. Also, definitely check out the BI Revealed book. Lots of info!

Which nesties have you met IRL?

I met Claire, Kara, and Sam back in the spring of 2009. Then I met Heather and Liz (along with Claire and Kara) over that summer.

Last year I met: Jaime, Jenn, Magda, and saw Heather and Sam again at Claire's house. We also met Mariella, Simon, and Stella.

Any idea what was causing your kitties to fight? (I'm glad to hear they're getting along better now!)

We really have no idea. It all started on day when it was snowing. I was home from work in the morning and went in around lunch time. DH worked from home all day. Milo must have wanted attention and climbed up on the cable box in the entrainment center. When Mark went to get him out Milo cried out like he was being killed. It must have irritated Bella and they ran off fighting, hissing, howling, etc.

    imageMrs.Keith2B:
Do you have any early favorites on AI this season?

    There's a girl and a guy I like but I don't really know anyone's names yet.

I'm digging it. I think it gave the show a "second wind".

    imageMrs.Keith2B:
What is one of your favorite things about your DH?

He's really smart and comes up with creative solution for things. He's also very handy around the house and can fix just about anything.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

Melbourne, Australia. I loved it and there were parts of the city where you didn't really feel like you were in one.

    imageCTri17:
If you could have any job, what would it be?

That's a toughy. I love research and genetics, so something with that. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what I would want to do since there's tons of topics related to genetics and many many techniques.

WHat is your favorite comfort food

Oh definitely mac & cheese. If I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life it would be that. I make a home made cheese sauce with cheddar, mozz, and Velveeta. Delish!

    imageMrsAD:
    What is your favorite season

This is such a hard question for me because there are many reasons I love about spring, summer, and fall, all for different things. I love how things are warming, blooming, and growing in the spring. The smells are amazing, not to mention all the colors and flowers. It totally brings me back to life after a dormant winter (which is my least favorite season, btw). I love summer, being warm, going to the beach, and staying outside super late because it is still light out. Fall foliage is just amazing though. I love seeing the leaves change their color. I love how the hot hot heat of summer is breaking and it is nice and comfortable outside.

    imageMrsAD:
What is your favorite vacation spot?

Growing up we always went to Vermont where my grandparents have a "summer" house. That was always my childhood vacation spot and we'd no a few times a year. We don't go away like that now. (As you know Amber) I went to Australia back in college and I loved it. I also loved our vacation Hawaii. I desperately want to go back to both locations.

    imageMrsAD:
Do you have any house projects planned after the basement?

We still really want to put a patio behind the house which the deck would lead to. Depending on when the basement is finished, what our finances look like, and if we go to DH's friend's wedding in FL this spring we may or may not move forward with it this spring/summer.

What type of makeup (mascara, foundation, etc.) that you would choose if you could only use one for a year?

Mascara. I have really short eye lashes.

    imagexojo1:
What's the name of your favorite restaurant?

I don't have one set favorite. I've been really liking Bertucci's because I love their minestrone soup and it is great in the winter.

    imagexojo1:
Any favorite names for possible children?

I've been really liking Jack lately for a boy. Every time I hear the name I think of our phantom son. But we'd only call him Jack if we named him after DH's father (John). And I'm not 100% sure he wants to do that. There are no other boy names we both like. We both like Samantha (Sam, Sammy) for a girl. I also like Sam for a boy but DH doesn't. I also really like Hannah (and we had TS Hanna during our wedding) but DH isn't sold.

    imagexojo1:
What was your high school mascot? College?

In HS we were in the Indians, but there wasn't a physical mascot. In college we were the Engineers ::hangs head in shame:: and the mascot as a goat (Gompie). Not sure how they got from engineers to goat. Hmm

  • I love the name Jack! DH is coming around to it, too.

    More questions:

Where do you shop for clothes and shoes most often?

What was your favorite subject in elementary school?

Are there any other careers you would consider that are unrelated to what you do now?

Would you rather have a bunch on snow (whatever is your standard of a bunch) fall in 24 hours and then have 6 days of sunshine or have it rain all day for 7 days (no worry of flooding)?

Kohls mostly. I've been shopping at Old Navy and Target more too. For shoes: DSW and Famous Footwear.

    imagexojo1:

    Math

    imagexojo1:
Are there any other careers you would consider that are unrelated to what you do now?

I love animals and when I was little I wanted to be a vet. I'd definitely like to work with animals if I wasn't in science.

This is really tough. After the winter we had I'm so sick of snow. I don't mind 7 days of clouds, but rain is annoying too. I think all in all I'd rather the 1 day of snow because we have a snow blower now.

What did you do in Hawaii on the day your siggy pic was taken?

That was our anniversary. Smile We were in Kauai and we went to the North Shore/Na Pali Coast for the day. First we hiked some of the Kalalau Trail (where this picture was taken) overlooking Kee Beach. Then we spent some time at Kee Beach snorkeling. After that we went to the little town of Hanalei, had lunch and walked around. In the afternoon we went ziplining in Princeville. We went back to Hanalei for dinner.

    imageHeather&Alexi:
How many kids do you and your DH hope to have one day?

    1 min, 2 max.

    imageHeather&Alexi:
Are you a kitty only mom, or would you ever get another type of pet?  If so, what kind?

While we have our current cats I wouldn't bring in another animal. I'd be open to rodents or a dog down the road, as long as someone else walks the dog (in bad weather).
