I decided I'm going to throw DH a birthday party since I've never really done anything for his birthday. I suck at gift giving for him. His birthday is May 31st so I'm thinking the Sunday before Memorial Day. It SHOULD be nice enough to have a bonfire and grill out.
How all out do I go for this? Mailed invitations? Do I BYOB? Potluck (we would supply the meat and birthday cake but have people bring sides) I'm not trying to spend a whole lot of money on this and it's not a milestone birthday or anything (he'll be 26).
Don't forget it's him and his friends that have the Christmas dinner every year so they would not overlook and would actually be receptive to me going "all out."
Now that I'm thinking about it, I should get a keg.

I think I might just give a heads up to the "important" people now. Just a quick save the date email.
I'm getting awfully excited. Too bad it's three months away.
I did a facebook invite about two weeks prior to DH's party last year, and let him be an admin so he could invite people that I wasn't friends with. Definitely let family know ahead of time though so they're there.
We provided meat, cake, and sides, but people brought things anyway. I think we had a limited amount of beer and I told people that they should bring their own if they wanted anything special. And it was BYOC - bring your own chair! We only have like 4 patio chairs, so I told people to bring their camping chairs if they wanted to sit.

Evite or mailed invitations
Save the date to those VIPs in March (2 months before) either in email or evite
Invitations 3-4 weeks before
If you have guests bring sides, I agree to provide the rest.
Or you supply all food and have them BYOB.
Okay, this is my plan:
1 keg, BYOB beyond that
Hamburgers or BYO meat to grill (very common practice in our circle)
Pasta salad & potato salad, bring a side if you want (I have a feeling family will want to)
Birthday cupcakes (our HR director could be on Cupcake Wars)
BYO chair (thanks!)
Already sent save the date email to family...will run it by some of his closest friends in a few weeks
Mailing invitations, potentially creating a facebook event but a lot of his friends who will be coming actually don't have facebook
