Help with a Job Hunt?

Let's try something a little less polarizing ;)

Any job-search website recommendations? H is really getting frustrated at his current job and is looking for a new job.  He works with a private small college doing student development/recruiting/advising/everything if that helps at all.  However, he's willing to look at other stuff too.  Are there any good websites to look for open positions that you'd recommend?

Re: Help with a Job Hunt?

  • I'm a fan of Indeed at www.indeed.com and Minnesota Council of Nonprofits www.mncn.org/jobs
    Anniversary
  • My DH got his current job by posting a resume on monster.com and his current company contacted him.

Your DH could try career builder, too.

    Good luck in his search!

Is he searching for a specific company? Going to their website might offer additional information. Or, going to multiple different companies might be more helpful than just monster or career builder or something.

  • I loved the www.mncn.org/jobs.   If he wants to do the same kind of work, I would google all colleges (and private highschools maybe) in the area he would be comfortable driving to, then check out their job sections.

I know several people who have found jobs in the last year doing the above. Not every company posts their openings on sites like monster or career builder. Especially in the current economy with so many job seekers, some companies have stopped advertising beyond their own websites because they can still get a good applicant pool without spending the money to advertise the opening externally.

Andy found his current job through theladders.com, that was about 3 years ago. That site requires a subscription. You can sign up for free, but if I remember correctly, you can't get useful information unless you pay for a subscription. Andy's current position wasn't actually posted there, but a recruiter saw his resume on the website and contacted him to ask him to apply for the job.

  • I work for a college in the MnSCU system, here is the link for job opportunities:

    http://www.mnscu.edu/about/jobopportunities/index.php

Also, individual colleges always list their openings on their websites.  Good luck!

This is very true.  I work in HR and we have been getting very large pools just from posting on our site, in the paper and through mnscu.  Plus, monster and careerbuilder cost money, and with budgets being tight, I'm sure they are being utilized less.

  • Thanks, ladies!

He's been searching on a few of the school's sites, but at this point I think he's willing to look at other options (outside of higher ed.) Just looking for some good suggestions.

We weren't sure if Monster was worth it or not, but I guess it can't hurt!

  • I always had good luck with indeed.com
