Talk to me if you have back problems

So a lot of you may know that I've struggled with bad hip pain for 4 years now.  It started when I was pg with Melinda and was chalked up to the extra weight that you carry in that general area.  Pain never went away, in fact, got worse, after she was born.  I've had x-rays, an MRI, a CT, a bone scan, physical therapy and a cortisone injection.  Nothing has helped or been found.

For the past few days not only am I experiencing the hip pain real bad, but it's now radiating in my lower back.  Bad!  Last night I was kneeling on the floor cutting material at the coffee table and I couldn't get back up.  I can't do the dishes anymore because just standing there is excruciating.  Even walking is starting to hurt.  When I go food shopping I end up bent over with my weight on the carriage by the end of my excursion.

Someone had suggested once that the hip pain may actually be due to a back issue.  But where the pain was always so isolated in the hip I didn't believe that to be the case.  Now, I wonder!

I'm so leary of back issues.  My Aunt has had severe back pain for over 20 years, and has had 2 surgeries, only to be worse off than she was in the beginning.

So talk to me.  This sucks!  My vicodin isn't even touching it.  UGH!  I'm seeing my doctor next week for a follow up on my sinus infection so I'm going to be discussing it with her then.

Re: Talk to me if you have back problems

  • I'm sorry. Nick gets really bad back pain (that started after carrying a patient) that puts him OUT. He's had more luck relieving pain by seeing a chiropractor than by taking any of the drugs they ever gave him. He's a vicodin lightweight, I usually cut his pills in half and they knock him on his butt, but when the back pain was at it's worst, he'd take 2, 500mg pills and it wouldn't touch the pain.

I hope you can find something that helps!

This for me - the chiropractor put me in traction, cracked me once and I felt SOOOO much better. :)  Hope something works for you soon!!

  • I just stared using a machine called TENS- got it from my chiro.  It is a small, portable, home version of the electrodes they put on you with the heat when you are waiting for the chiro.  I am supposed to put it on for a few hours a day, but i forget.  you can walk around with it and do everything around teh house, my chiro thought i woudl wear it out too.  He has me surround teh pain spot and teh surge goes through and around the pain spot...it is pretty good when i have pulled something.  My insurance covers it (although i got a bill for a copay, but have to talk to him about it b/c he said i was fully covered- i think it might be to pay him and he will not have me pay him i am guessing...hoping).  You should ask if you go to a chiro or possible PT too.
  • I have had hip pain since I was pregnant with Maddy, but haven't even really mentioned it to my doctor. I have a notoriously bad back - lots of sciatica, and I've been told I just have weak lower back muscles. I've "thrown it out" several times and have been completely unable to move, which is when they decided it was a muscular issues.

My mom has a bad back too, so it's all just genetic for me. Once I'm done nursing Maddy and a few months have gone by for my body to be "normal" again I'm going to talk to a doctor about my hip if it's still hurting. I can't do anything without ending up in pain. Same as you, a trip to the grocery store or target and my hip is killing me.

  • It's awful!  I was so proud of myself doing the C25K thing over the summer, things were good.  Then one day I couldn't even get through the first 1/4 of the run because my hip flared up.  Tried again a few days later, same thing.  I can't exercise.  Which means losing weight is out of the question.  And I'm sure the extra weight just puts more pressure on it.  It's a vicious cycle!!  I feel so old!!

  • The only exercise that doesn't make me cry lately is yoga. The stretching actually makes everything feel a bit better.

The pain is crazy. When I met a few girls in the city in December for our girls' day out I was literally crying by the time I got home on the train. I literally couldn't get up to get off the train I was in such crazy pain in my hip and back. I've been researching it a bit and still have no clue.

Same thing here as Michele - bad sciatica pain.

I ended up getting an Amber necklace (more for the design initially because I bought one for G for teething pain) and it actually did help with the pain tremendously.  If I take it off for more than a day the pain comes back.

Not sure if you want to go and try this route, but figured I'd through it out there - might not make yours completely go away, but might help a bit.

here's where I got mine - if you friend them on facebook they tend to have a ton of great sales (40-50% off sometimes):

  • This is going to be long and weird. But I digress..so you know how I have been having weird hip problems? And my back goes out too? Well, my best friend has been having weird vagina problems. For a long time. And pain in her hip/back/sciatica. It turns out basically having her last baby ruined her. She has a hyper tensive vagina, a tilted pelvis, and piriformis muscle syndrome (bad ass hip/butt pain - this is what I have, sounds like you too) She has to see a physical therapist for her vagina once a week and went to this crazy ob in the city that specializes in this. Basically it's all hormone related. The week before her period she's in the most pain and has a hard time sitting for long periods of time, no sex. ect. So fast forward to my weird hip/barbie leg pain and bad back. I was about to go to dr for it because I could barely walk/sleep and then the pain stopped. It stopped the day I got my period. Turns out it's all hormone/having child related too! Do you notice the pain is worse right before you get your period? Or when you're ovulating? Stretching helps a ton. This is a good one for the hip.

The other thing is seeing a chiropractor or an acupuncturist. Medicine isn't really going to help all that much. Except for..valium up the vagina or butt. Seriously. HA! Or, the newest treatment, shots of botox in your vagina. Crazy town!!!!! I'm not doing any of the meds but am stretching and am going to try going to an acupuncturist if I can find one close enough.  Ok enough weirdness. And no facebook! I'm not sure she'd love a talk about her botoxed vagina on my wall :)

  • So she had botox injections in her lips?

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

That's crazy, crazy I tell you!

The pain is always way worse leading up to, and during my period.  I have no vagina issues though, thankfully!  But yeah, during my period I'm in agony with my hip.  The ortho I was seeing for my hip basically said that if the cortisone didn't help, that it was all pain management from here on in.  He did say that having kids can literally ruin some women's bodies.  I may be one of those cases.  Plus, having them 16 months apart like I did and already being of advanced maternal age didn't help my case much.

    DAMN KIDS!

  • Ha! Yeah. nuts right? Thankfully my vagina is fine too but I guess the hormones/weight of your uterus right before and during your period totally f's w/ the hip/back/ piriformis muscle. And it can be caused by crappy pelvic floor muscles. Which I def. have. Thanks kids! Thanks episiotomy! Doing kegels can help too. But seriously try that stretch, it helps a ton!!
  • I'm so afraid that it's just as a result of having the 2 kids.... My hip has really been bugging me this past week or so and it's that time of the month so maybe I need to pay a little more attention to see if it really goes up and down with my hormone levels.

Good grief. I've been reading up on post partum fibromyalgia too, b/c it seems a lot of women end up with it after having babies.

This is NOT fun. There are many things people do and don't warn you about when it comes to having kids, but this one takes the cake. Living in pain almost every single day of my life is NOT cool. NOT cool at all.

  • Never mind the incontinence.  I can't laugh, pee, cough, have sex, move, blink, whatever...without peeing a little.

  • Did you have any of these issues w/either of your pregnancies?

While I was pregnant w/E, I had SPD (Symphis Pubis Dysfunction) that caused severe pain in my hips, thighs, groin, butt and even effected my lower back.   They say it goes away, but I still have some remnants of it.   I would def talk to your reg dr or even Gyno about it because hormones could def. be effecting it.

    Feel better!

  • I was going to suggest acupuncture, too.  I found a lot of relief for various issues I was having when I went regularly.  Also, I know it's not even close to what you're experiencing, but in prenatal yoga we focus on back and hip stretching and lots of pelviv strengthening.  I think some studios offer private lessons - perhaps if you call around and find one that does you can invest in a few sessions to learn some moves for relief.   I hope you find something that helps!

This all started when I was pregnant with Mel.  My ob sent me to pt and it did nothing.  I then spoke to her about it again last year at my yearly and she didn't feel it was a gyno issue.  My PCP suggested it could be hormonal related to a gyno issue, but like I said, my GYN disagreed.

I swear, I talk to every doctor I see about this issue hoping it resonates with someone (I even told my dentist for crap's sake).  Everyone's baffled.  I'm a mystery!

Okay 1st, just so you know losing weight being out of the question is NOT TRUE.  I don't exercise at ALL right now and haven't since Sept because I can't figure out when I can and I'm still losing weight.  slowly.  but still losing.

and I'm going back on the record that I have thought this had to do with your lower back ALL along since I would get similar pains when I injured my back in 07.  I still get the pain in my hip (which sends me into fits of OMG ITS MY APPENDIX) and then when I favor the hip my back just throws a hissy fit.  (Lots of fits happening over here)

  • ok I replied before we got to talking about hoohas.

I don't want to know about hoo ha's needing shots.

  • I honestly think it's a hormone issue. I know it sounds nuts but if you want I can ask my friend for her recommendations on the books she's been reading. She went through all sorts of dr's ect. before they figured out the problem. Her gyno thought she was crazy. She was on all sorts of meds ect. It wasn't until she started talking to the pa at her gyno that they started figuring it all out. She's in florida right now but I'll find out from her later this week.
  • Definitely Erin, that would be awesome!
