Renting Car vs Cab - Vacay Related

Does anyone have arguments for either way?

We're going to FL (as posted) for a wedding in Oct.  The plan is to go Wed night - Sun. We could get cheaper flights if we flew into Ft Lauderdale and rented a car for the hour drive to West Palm Beach instead of flying there directly.  To rent a car for the time w/unlimited miles is $145 (according to Priceline, who I'm thinking of booking with). But that doesn't include gas or insurance

If we flew into Palm Beach on the other hand, our flights would be a little higher (although we'd save the 2+ hr driving time), but cabs from the airport to the hotel we'll stay at is $55 one way, without tip.  So I'm guessing at least $130 r/t.

IMO, doesn't it make sense to rent the car and then we can have more "freedom" there for non-wedding stuff?  For example, beach to hotel isn't walkable according to the bride and it's a 10 minute drive, so that's one guranteed r/t. DH thinks we shouldn't rent a car...and I'm trying to see if from both points of view.

  • I would rent the car simply because I like the freedom of being able to do what we went during our downtime.  JMO

  • I would rent a car. I hate the feeling of being "trapped" so even if you didnt get a chance to use it much you would at least have the option. Does that make any sense?

For example when we go to CO to Mikes grandma we always rent a car even though we are within walking distance of just about everything. It gives us more freedom to get out and about and that in itself is totally worth the money.

  • Haha, you girls are definitely on the same page as me.

Especially since DH is sometimes shy, I can't imagine him wanted to carpool w/other H's/BM dates to the rehearsal and ceremony.  I figure if he wants to, then he could drive himself to those things, at least the ceremony and then drive back to the hotel b/c there's transportation from the hotel to the reception provided by br/gm.

And since I've never been in the area before, it'd be nice to have the option to explore, drive to the beach, etc.  Hmmf! Hopefully DH comes around!

  • I would definitely rent the car.  All those cabs rides add up.  And don't forget to check and see if you get a company discount or if you have AAA you should get a discount too! :)

    Hadn't thought of this...thanks!

  • I know that BJ's members get a discount on Enterprise rentals as well. I'd definitely say rent the car, especially since you'll be there for more than just the wedding.

Are you both over 25? I can't remember (sorry!), but only ask because there's typically a ridiculous surcharge for rental cars if you aren't, so be sure to factor that in if that's the case.

Lol no, but we will be at time of rental. I've had to deal with the surchages before, PIA, luckily it was a company trip and I was reimbursed.
  • I would say rent a car. Do you guys have car insurance already? Because if so, so don't have to buy the rental car's insurance.

  • I also vote for renting the car. As PP have said having the freedom to do what you want is a huge advantage to that.

And if not, check the cardholder agreement for whichever credit card you'll be using for the rental.  Most of them have clauses covering damage to rental cars, roughly the equivalent of the basic insurance coverage offered by a car rental company.

  • I agree with everyone else; I think renting a car would be the best idea.  I think you'd end up spending way more on cabs and I think that'd be a little stressful, to have to call a cab to take you every where.  I say just book it and tell DH later lol.

I may need to take this advice!

Nice call on car insurance and CC's.  I'll have to look into that. Thanks
