Big Sisters?

Is anyone here a Big Sister or been one in the past? Or had one?

I'm want to do more regular community service and am considering applying to join the program.

Re: Big Sisters?

  • I was considering it at one point but then life got crazy and I want to be able to truly devote time to the program and I just wasn't able to.

  • I'm a Big Sister!  I signed up in the summer of 2007 and was matched at the beginning of 2008, so it has been 3 years now.  I requested a Hispanic girl about middle-school age.  I think every experience is as different as the Bigs and Littles matched up, but the BBBS organization seems to do a good job of finding the right fit for each.  My Little and I used to get together at least every other week, but now that I'm married and she's almost 16, both of schedules are a bit fuller.  However, we still manage to make it work.  The BBBS office here sends out e-mails every now and then of things going on in the community that might serve as possible outings for us, but we also do things like go to movies, out to eat, etc.

I definitely recommend it, and I know your local BBBS would really appreciate it!  :-)

Did you have any specific questions that I could try to answer?

    "You're the L and the V, I'm the O and the E...Am I speaking clearly?"
  • This is something I have considered too.  DH and I both have discussed how we would like to volunteer regularly somewhere.

Aw, awesome!  What kind of ages are "available" and what kind of activities did you do?

I read that in the first 90 days you can't expose (ha, if that's the right word) your LS to spouse, extra...do you always do activities in public places?  I mean, I could see watching a chick-flick and hanging out too besides other activities, or is that not allowed?

  • I don't know what the starting age is, but it goes all the way up through the teens.

I do remember them saying something about those first few months and other family members, but I was single at the time so I guess I didn't have to worry too much about it.  You don't have to always be in public places, but that is most often what my LS and I do.  At first, it was because of my previous living situation.  I didn't live with DH, but neither did I live alone, and sometimes it was hard to have the house to myself (when it would have been more convenient to have her over).  But I did manage to have her over a couple times when I knew it could just be us without being in anyone's way.

Since I live in FL, it's pretty easy to be outside year-round, so I try to do stuff outside with her if it's not raining or too hot/cold.  Sometimes, we do something that will take up a good chunk of the day.  I have a friend in the Coast Guard who used to be stationed in St. Pete, so one day we drove up there and got to tour two different CG cutters.  Then we went to lunch before heading back home.  I have taken her to fairs, parks, a museum or two, etc.  But sometimes we only have maybe 1 1/2 to two hours together, so we'll just go out for ice cream or something and chat.  I'm not a big baker, but I know some Bigs sometimes have their Littles over to their homes and just bake cookies and stuff.

One Saturday, we're planning on doing a random road trip.  Basically, I will start driving on a main road to get out of town, but we will have no set destination in mind.  Once we get to another major road or intersection, she'll get to choose left, right or straight.  We'll do that for a while and see where we end up.  I did this with a friend of mine once, and we ended up on the other coast of FL!  We stuck our feet in the Atlantic Ocean, ate at a waterside restaurant, and took lots of pics.  We took a slightly different route on the way back and ended up at a major lake here in FL.  It was totally unplanned and ended being a lot of fun.

  • When I was younger one of my really good friends was a LS- her BS was awesome! She would always talk about the awesome outings and stuff they would do. I was always so jealous and wanted to become a LS haha

  • A few of the officers at my work are BB's, I have been thinking about volunteering somewhere also. Maybe I should look into it also.
