More TMI Boob Stuff (Mommies come in)

I figured out that I have a milk blister.

Any experience with this? Treatment? I see that I should be putting a hot wet compress on it prior to nursing and pumping...because I have time at work to go get a hot compress and THEN pump.

**sigh**

Re: More TMI Boob Stuff (Mommies come in)

  • Yes! I've pretty much had every kind of PITA BF'ing issue you can have if you haven't already noticed ;)  Good news is that I got through all of them!  I had a milk blister on my right breast for a a couple months between 10-12 months.  I almost stopped nursing or at least stopped on that side because it got really bad and painful.  Early on I noticed a little white discoloration on my nipple and didn't think anything of it, but should have taken care of it immediately.  It only got bigger and caused one of my ducts to get really backed up with stringy ropes of dried milk in my breast which was very painful.  The LC recommended wearing an olive oil soaked cotton ball over my nipple in my bra throughout the day with a breast pad to help soften it.  Then prior to pumping use a hot wet compress or soak your nipple in a bowl of warm water to soften it more.  This sounds gross, but you can also pick the layer of skin away with a sterilized needle to open it up.  Then pump that side while doing compressions to force the milk out.  It was such a process to get this thing to resolve, and it was very hard as working mother to find time to soak my boob in a bowl of water 5 times a day and sit around with olive oil in my bra at work!  But it did eventually resolve and we kept nursing for months after, so in the end it was okay.

  • I knew you would know!!

I noticed it about 2-3 weeks ago...I should have thought more about why I had a white bump on my nipple! I don't have (I don't think) any plugged ducts so hopefully I have caught it in time. I'm soaking it with a hot wet cloth. And no way am I taking a needle to my nipple.

    Thanks Megan!

  • Yep, sounds like you are catching it early which is good.  I thought I had thrush a second time because the pain was so intense, but nope, it was just that damn little white dot.  The LC said some people are more prone to them because their milk is 'stickier' and can dry and form that little plug which then grows over with skin.  If it becomes recurrent there's a natural supplement you can take that will thin your milk out a bit.  Hopefully it's a one time thing and hopefully it resolves quickly without the needle!  I had a 5 day weekend over the summer when my best friend was visiting, so I took advantage of the time to work on it; I'm sure she was surprised to find she was spending that much time with me and my boob in a bowl of hot water.

ETA: Also funny - they're actually not that common .  When I went into the LC she called in a bunch of nurses and another LC to look at it because they had never seen one before and wanted to check mine out.  Your LC might be excited if you tell her you have one!

  • Everyone has given great advice, and I just want to add that I had one too and they SUCK!!!  I remember it hurt so bad, and it ruptured and led to a yeast infection when Jake was like 16 months old   :o(.  Luckily, both were treatable and all is well, but hopefully yours will just go away!

  • I used to do a soak in hot water/Epsom salt (about 5 mins?), then the hot compress, then nurse.  Afterwards I used a mix of grapefruit seed extract and distilled water, though I read olive oil and GSE as a recommendation as well.  I definitely don't recommend popping it, they're easily infected and can lead to mastitis.  GL!  I used to get them constantly, the first 6 months of BFing was uncomfortable for me :P
