back pain... help!

In the last two days, I've got my stress induced back pain flaring up again (it's been a while since I had it last).

It's from being in my Gollum position all day over my computer while I write my thesis.   It's right in between my shoulder blades, mostly on one side.   I've started taking ibuprofen yesterday, but it just barely takes of the edge of extruating zapes I get if move 'wrong'.  The constant ache will not let up. I rarely take medications, so small doses usually work well, but this time it's not.

I'm contemplating calling a chiropractor, but have any of you found relief from back pain through any medication (OTC preferred, but I'll take a Rx tip), specific stretches, chiropractor or masseuse?

Clearly I need to fix my poster (I drive my ballroom instructor nuts, but she has helped me a lot)... so I'm working on it, but any advice other than that so I can finish my thesis in a little less pain?

Re: back pain... help!

  • Aleve or Excederine back and body... I find massage works wonders, but only if you CAN relax... otherwise my back is worse afterward.
  • Maybe try some yoga stretches like cat and cow?

I would try a massage and a hot bath before going to the chiropractor. I'm not a fan of chiros.

  • Yow, no fun!!

I don't really have problems with my back, but I have a bad knee and severe arthritis in my hands.  I find that Lortab seems to work best for them.  You'll need a prescription, though.

  • I try stretches. Hug yourself really tight to stretch the muscles between your shoulder blades, as well as lengthening in your neck by pulling your shoulders down.

I don't think I would go to a chiro for it, but a massage therapist yes.

For muscle aches and pains I love to use Biofreeze. It's this amazing muscle relaxant that works wonders. It feels really cool after you put it on but you'll definitely feel the difference after a few applications. If comes in spray, cream, or gel form. I usually get the gel.

  • I agree with the stretches and maybe seeing a massage therapist. Some chiros are not all bad. Mike has been seeing one for about 3 months and they havent done any cracking or popping. They are working on adjusting but in different ways. I really dont know how to describe it, Mike says the guys is more into holistic stuff than anything else.

    Hope it feels better soon!!

  • I get tension headaches, have 2 herniated discs in my neck, and chronic lower-back muscle spasm.

I don't like any prescription meds and don't take them. They haven't worked for me in the past and give me a headache (when I am taking them for backache) and make me feel "foggy".

Ibuprofen and Excedrin Back & Body work best for me. I also love Biofreeze.

I have been to chiropractors, massage therapy, physical therapy, and acupuncture. Physical therapy does zero for me. Acupuncture helped some. The best was a combination of both chiropractor and massage therapy- but deep massage, where it almost hurts- not "fluff and buff". lol. I like the crack and pop of the chiro. For me, it provides some instant relief.

  • Someone recently told me there is an OTC muscle relaxer but I'm not sure what it's called.  Maybe try googlin' it?

     I hope you feel better!

  • Heat... heat pack or heating pads for 20-30mins at a time help my neck, which goes into spasm from time to time. I have a low-weight muscle relaxant (methocarbomal; I can still drive on it) when it's really bad.

  • I agree with what PP have said about a massage.

In addition, definitly try heat - I had a bad ache in my neck and a heating pad helped SO much. You should use the heat for about 20 minutes at a time.

  • Oh yeah, also try Tiger or Badger Balm. I use that after I have gone snowboarding and it works wonders.
