I live in Spring Hill.
Pros would be it is cheaper than Tampa.
Cons would be it is about 30 mins from Tampa.

Cons: Ahem. I don't think you really care to hear me biitch about Texas :P So I will spare you. But I hate this place.
But I highly doubt you were really interested to hear about where I live or are considering moving here anytime soon!

I live in Trinity/New Port Richey.
I am planning on moving as soon as my lease ends in July. I plan on moving away from here.....so, that tells you how I feel about where I live.
When we moved down from Massachusetts we rented in Lakeland because we weren't sure whether we wanted to end up in Tampa or Orlando. The pro was that we were right off of I4, so that was convenient. The con was that there seemed to be a lot of arrests outside of our apartment and I felt like I kept hearing about "brutal murders" on the news. I was ecstatic to move.
We moved to New Tampa last Thursday, so far I'm really happy with the move.

Pros:
No traffic....and you can actually go shopping during Christmas time without wanting to kill someone
Its close to the beach (10min drive)
Very quiet
Cons:
The drive to Tampa costs about $5 each way if you want to make it there quickly by driving on the expressway (45mins)

Brandon/Riverview/Tampa
Pros: It is semi developed and many neighborhoods. Is reasonably priced (unlike some other areas SOHO/ New Tampa)
Cons: I feel like there is always construction going on, schools aren't always the best (well that goes for most of FL)

I live in Tampa, in the South Tampa area.
Pros: Very convenient location to other nearby areas (Brandon, St. Pete etc). Great public schools, nearby to lots of great restaurants, entertainment options, nightlife, shopping etc. Closer to the beaches in St. Pete than most other parts of Tampa. I've only lived in South Tampa the whole time I've been in Tampa and don't see myself ever living in another part of Tampa.
Cons: Housing is more expensive (both for rentals and buying), more older homes and less new construction (I see this a pro actually but I know some people see it more as a con), more crowded I guess than compared to other areas.
I am looking at Fort Myers/Naples...relocating...and I've heard the same thing...which makes me nervous since I'm single! But I vacationed in Naples last year and loved it!
Aw, I am sorry you had a bad experience with Lakeland! Where was your apt?? If you were near the hospital, then yes...it is not the greatest area. But, there are beautiful neighborhoods on both the north and southside. I used to live in the New Tampa area and my god, the TRAFFIC!!!!
Fort Myers
Pros - nice location pretty close to everything
cons - hard to meet other families, not a whole lot to do.
Gulfport
pros-nice artsy community, close to beaches, interstate, mall, etc. almost has a small town feel
cons-not the best schools (we are looking at getting dd into private school when it's time), borders some not so nice areas.
I live in Lakeland too. However, we are not too fond of it. We live in a nice townhouse community that I bought 2 years ago and our house got broken into right before Thanksgiving. We are hopefully going to be moving after the baby is born. I just don't feel safe in Lakeland anymore : (
Orlando (east side near the UCF area)
Pros: Close to everything without being too close. I love the area we live in!
Cons: The costs for the toll roads (although I gladly pay them to avoid some of the other highways) and the crazy tourists whenever we get closer to the Disney side of things.
