Building a retaining wall--any idea of the costs?
I know it'll vary a ton based on materials, height, terrain, etc... but if anyone has had a retaining wall built, could you give me an idea of the size (height/length) and the cost? Any recommendations for companies you've worked with?
DH and I have grand ideas of what we'd like to do in our backyard...but we definitely need excavation/leveling and a decent-size wall (probably 6 feet high x 30 feet long??) I have a feeling this will be way over our home repair budget for this year...but still holding out hope we can pull it off!

Re: Building a retaining wall--any idea of the costs?
We are actually in the process of starting to get a wall built. We had a landscape architech come and develop a whole yard plan for us which includes quite a few retaining walls. His general estimates for the wall companies he uses were about $20 a foot for Allan block or $ 28 a foot for the Europa block. That includes all materials and building the wall. When we got our estimates back from the companies they came in a little lower than that overall, but I would think those numbers will give you a general estimate of what a wall will cost you from a reputable company.
Also, remember if your wall is going to be 6 feet high it will probably need about 2 feet of wall underground to give it a good base... so you will need enough materials for 8 ft tall so think about that when looking at cost. You should figure on 240 feet rather than 180 feet.
Many companies will give you free estimates if you call them.
We are going to work with Outdoor Enviroments Inc.
Thanks for the info, that helps a lot!
I figured companies would give free estimates...but I feel kind of bad having them come out and estimate the job knowing there's a good chance it won't be in our budget this year. The wall is just one part of what we want to do in the yard...and it's a lower priority b/c other items (tree removal, fixing drainage in the creek) are necessities this year, whereas the wall/extra yard space are "nice to have" items.
