What do you splurge on?

My friend had style her hair really well this morning. She uses Bumble & Bumble. I normally get discounts through my aunt who owns a salon. She doesn't carry that line though. I might have to splurge to get it. I know it is pricier.

Got me thinking, and to mix up the board a bit.

What do you splurge on? Hair products, nail polish, shoes, orange juice?

Mine - Nail polish, lipstick, orange juice, baked goods, fruit, home decor occasionally. Probably more too. Just what I could think of now.

Re: What do you splurge on?

  • Hmmm, I would say clothes but I really try to find good deals and use coupons when I can...so I guess I really don't consider that a complete splurge.

I definitely splurge on dresses sometimes. Like if I'm going to a wedding, if I see a dress I LOVE, I'll buy it, even if I don't really need another fancy dress. Oopsy.

I splurge on paint. I refuse to paint with anything other than Benjamin Moore and it's $50/gallon. Maybe one day I'll switch:)

I buy a lot of things for our house, but again, I don't really think it's a splurge because I shop around for the best deals and usually find sales.

Lola. We bought her a bag of treats the other day that cost $19. WTF. But she loves them! I couldn't resist! :)

  • Clinique Butter Shine lipstick (Pink Goddess is my favorite shade).

MetroMint spearmint or peppermint water - It's like $6 for a four pack but I love it.

    Benefit Erase Paste concealer

for Ellie, California Baby Tea Tree Oil shampoo. It keeps her from getting cradle cap.
  • I splurge on: Hair products (I use Rusk), nail polish (OPI, Essie, RBL, Lippman), anything I put on my face (Clinique, Dior and Benefit), formalwear, tailoring.  Oh, and good high heels are usually a splurge- saves your feet later.

Sometimes I splurge on house stuff, but mostly that is done on budget because it doesn't have a strict deadline.

Other than that my only useless expenditure is about $2 on energy drinks.  I clip coupons for virtually everything and price compare stores for food, and I never, ever buy baked goods or anything like that because I can make it better at home.

  • I thought of another one. Now that I'm pregnant, we've been splurging more on organic food than usual.
  • i splurge on: coffee (starbucks only), tea (starbucks only. i normally buy canisters of the bags and make it myself), dove chocolate, LBD's (i own at least nine that i can think of off the top of my head), wine (i only like local PA/NY), meats (we have a lot of deer meat from Andys hunting so i feel like that allows me to splurge on fish and pork cuts), medicine (i hate no-name brands i like Tylenol, Advil, Excedrin, Day/Nyquil, sudafed, etc)

ETA- handbags. i refuse to go cheap.

  • Coffee for sure.  Sure, I could buy a pound and make my own k-cups, but I just can't get away from DD, Starbucks, and MaryLous

    Skin care - Philosophy, PCA

My nails - OPI for color, and shellac manicures

I'm also a sucker for Vera Bradley.

  • I splurge on my makeup. I hate the way things like cover girl or almay, etc look on my skin. I also feel like it makes my skin look better when I have no makeup on.

I also go all out on my bags (or rather H does). When I lived in the city I would go to China town and buy cheap knock offs (poor college student) but when I started dating H and he would buy me designer I have become somewhat spoiled with my bags.

smaller things that I splurge on are orange juice (tropicana), bottled water, candles and toilet paper.

  • I too splurge on paint- we use Sherwin Williams which is in the $40-$50 range. We'll never go to any other paint now.

I splurge on everything for my animals. The 2 dogs go to the groomer every month totaling $100 every time. Eeeep. That's a lot all year not including the vet. And they go all. the. time. Anytime we get a bit nervous about anything they're doing we take them right in. Always at least $120 a visit. We also spend a lot on their food, treats, etc. They only eat Wellness and it's pricey. Not to mention getting Bandit and his heartworm treatments this year. He has to go more often to be sure they're gone. Also, I buy lots of clothes for the dogs. Whoops....

For myself, I splurge on getting myself pampered. I go frequently to get massages, facials, manicures, pedicures and I go regularly to get my hair cut and highlighted.

I buy lots of clothes for both Kevin and myself but I don't buy expensive clothes. I probably would be better off buying fewer designer pieces but I have no where to wear them to. So I shop at Target!

I too splurge on Lemonade, OJ, deli meat, cheese,  bread, and soda. I'm really picky about them.

Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • Hair products: I only buy salon brands. I have really thick hair and any drugstore type makes it look like a mop.

Make-up: I will only use MAC eyeshadow.

Pedicures: Even though I'm fully capable of taking care of my own feet, I'd rather sit back and have someone else do it for me.

  • Mine: Books (I can't just buy one), handbags, nail polish (hooked on OPI now), getting manicures, jewlery, I would say clothes only because when I do get out to shop I buy a TON!

    ExerciseMilestone
  • Makeup - I  ? Smashbox

OJ - I only drink Simply Orange. Everything else is crap. It's worth it, even though it's 2x what the other OJ costs.

Camera stuff - in most cases (95% of the time) I would rather buy the name brand of something instead of the generic. It's made better and worth the extra cost.

  • I can't really think of anything I splurge on except for dining out/in. That's been the one thing that we've been trying really hard to cut back on but we don't seem to be doing well with it. We order out a lot as well as meet up with friends for dinner.

  • handbags, but they're all from the outlets so it's more of just going for high quality at a good price than needlessly spending money.

food- ingredients (I rarely eat out), cookbooks and kitchen tools.

less often, clothing- I have my favorite designers and I go nuts during their annual sales.

yarn- it's my favorite hobby. I justify my splurges by never replacing my super old electronics (except for the new computer Clint talked me into buying)

Dishes- our every day china cost more per place setting than our gold-rimmed fine china. To me, it's 100% worth the money- especially after I emailed the company to say one of our salad plates had a huge crack, and they mailed me a replacement for free, no questions asked! I also used to by a ton of different serving dishes at various stores until Clint pointed out we have enough, and no where to store them.

  • I splurge on alot when we have extra money in the summertime.

I will always spend extra for food for sure. We eat out alot in the summer (mostly because we stick to a budget in the winter, but also because alot of places close.).

Purses, Coach has been my splurge for a while, but I'm getting savvy to Vera lately...

    Mani/Pedi's are awesome.

    Wine!

  • Gasoline, for the car. So expensive.

Seriously, I just finally was able, after almost 2 years, to buy my Aveda Sensitive Skin cleanser and moisturizer, and that made me super happy.

I also have been splurging lately on wine. I used to not notice the difference between the good stuff and the cheap stuff, but then B bought me this 2006 petit syrah about a month ago and that set me off on a tangent to find it again. Alas, I have not, but I have developed too refined a palate for wine. One interest that will cost me a lot of money, I predict.

Other splurges include: the occasional purchase of Redken or Biolage shampoo/conditioner; Diet Coke, no matter how much it costs; Gap underwears (the only panties I will wear, tho I try to stock up when they're on sale); a good piece of swordfish or tuna from the fish store; and Scott's toilet paper. I refuse to buy any other kind. Oh and I agree with Michelle about Simply Orange. All other OJs simply suck.

  • We manly splurge on organic meat, dairy and some veggies and fruit. Also, I try to buy natural beauty and shower products. I definitely shop around for the best prices on all of them, but it's still a splurge even with the coupons!

  • I'm such a cheapskate. I don't splurge on anything. I like Simply Orange, but I still usually only buy it if it's on sale or I have a coupon. I pay to get my eyebrows waxed rather than tweezing, but that's only $8. Sometimes I'll treat myself to a mani/pedi. I have a Coach purse, but it was a birthday gift from Robin, and even he bought it from an outlet.
  • I don't splurge on much. I do splurge on my work shoes (Danskos) because I'm on my feet for 12 hours at a time. And I do plan to get myself a massage every time I get my period. I also splurge a bit on my makeup (Bare Minerals) although I think the money I used to waste on trying every kind of cheap makeup out there was probably more than I spend on makeup now that I only use one brand.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • Makeup - I love MAC, Clinique and Smashbox.

Handbags - I splurge and buy 2 higher end handbags a year (love Kate Spade and Michael Kors ), one for fall/winter and one for spring/summer.

Hair Products - With my curly hair, it can be tough to find good products.  I use Deva Curl shampoo and conditioner, and the Curls Rock product line by Catwalk (Tigi).

Groceries - We're on Weight Watchers now, so we're buying a lot of healthy food (even more than we used to) and stuff for recipes, which drives our grocery bill up higher than I'd like to admit!

  • Makeup-   MAC, Dior, NARS, Benefit. Before I got pregnant, I revamped my skin care stuff (Philosophy) but many of those things I cant use now. Annoying. I used to only buy Aveda or Biolage (LOVE the smell of Biolage) but its so expensive and really, I just wash it down the drain anyway. Dove works fine.

Food-    Last year I was on this huge organic kick. I refused to buy anything but the organic, free range, cage free meats; and organic milk and cheese. I either grew veggies/fruits or bought them from the Farmer's Market. And I was huge into locally grown stuff. Its harder now though since I obviously cant grow anything and there's very little at the winter Farmer's Markets. I do spend more on organic milk and other dairy now that I'm pregnant and I go for the better quality meats as well. I dont buy organic in the grocery store unless its on sale. I'd just rather put that extra money toward milk and meats. This is kind of a sore spot between Jesse and I. He doesnt understand paying $6 for a gallon of milk when we can get one for $2.49. Even though he can totally tell the difference. I've compared it to the better beer he insists on but he kind of rolls his eyes. So I do the shopping and I buy it anyway. :)

Toilet Paper- I hate the super cheap stuff. Its pointless.

I dont buy expensive clothes, shoes, handbags, or things for our house. I'm so cheap in those ways actually. I dont need expensive clothes... I nanny so anything expensive would silly and wearing expensive shoes doesnt work well. Before that I worked in public health so as long as I didnt show up in jammies, I was good to go. I have a few Coach bags from outlets that I bought before we were married but I guess I'm just not as into that as before. Almost everything I wear was either on sale, bought with a coupon or on the clearance rack. I cant think of the last thing I pair full price for. I think the most I've ever spent on shoes was $100 and those are my running shoes.

Yeah... that's us too.  We get by on coupons and sales when it comes to groceries.  We buy all of our meat at a local butcher, which is actually cheaper than the grocery store (and I refuse to  buy mass market "meat".)  What we do spend more on than we need to is special meals when we want to make something special - either for a holiday or an anniversary or date night.  And this is completely frivolous - each summer we take a long weekend to Philadelphia and for the past couple years we've hit some NFL games.  Having money to spend on those joint experiences are more important to me than purses or shoes or makeup.

  • Food for sure, hair and makeup for special events, I get my hair done every 5-6 weeks, nails every 2-3 (now slowed down due to being busy), cookware.
  • we dont really splurge on alot except maybe food everyone once in a while. Some of the "nicer" grocery stores have better produce. We eat alot of fruit but we also live in a very very big ag community and can find locally grown fruits and veggies at the farmers market, or know someone who grows them.

We do however buy charmin TP. We also buy name brand bread, soda, butter, H has to have salami. Other than that i'd say thats it.
