exit polls

I think exit polls are the devil.  I hate that the decision of whether people on the west coast go vote is influenced by the pundits and "results" coming out of the east coast.

I understand the media's need to have The Story as early as possible, but it seems like it just does a disservice to the election, as there is a clear impact on later voters.  I would probably go insane, having to wait until the California polls close to get any news, but it seems like a better way to go.

Thoughts?

Re: exit polls

  • Its a love hate relationship. I love hearing them becuase I want current stats all the time, but at the same time I do think that they can effect the elections outcome, esp. in a close election.

Being on the west coast and in CA which is a very trusty blue state sometimes they make it feel like our votes dont even matter, which is funny since we have such a high number of electoral votes.

  • I agree with you. I've read that some news networks are going to be more cautious with exit poll results this year, although they'll still post real results from the east coast before polls close on the west coast.

  • who am I kidding -- i am a results junkie.  I'd never make it without exit polls!  i was the one at home refreshing the Iowa results every 30 seconds during the Dem caucuses b/c their "every two minutes" reloading wasn't fast enough!
  • I'm also addicted for the quick fix, and I appreciate that the networks are so much more cautious after '00.

I feel like CA, OR and WA are so blue it doesn't have too much of an affect. Plus people do vote throughout the day; are they really going to go home, turn on the news, figure out who's winning and then decide whether to go back out and vote? I mean, my polling place is across the street from my house, but I realize that's not the case for most people.

I think there's a possibility it could be an issue with the swing states of NV, NM, CO and even AZ and MT this year. But even still, they're another hour closer to the east coast, and chances are not good that OH, PA and FL will all be decided by the time their polls close.

Really I love that the whole night is about the returns out here. I can't wait!!
