Steff, i totally feel you on the 5k training!  i feel like a loser saying i am training for a 5k as is, i feel like a bigger loser that i can really only run for 1.5 miles straight before wanting to die, and that when i do the walking "spurts" i still feel like i want to die.  i am scared i will not be able to do this in 3.5 weeks!!  i am dropping all other focuses at the gym for right now and just trying to complete my 3.2 miles any way i can, which right now takes about 34 minutes.

we can both do it!  just keep sticking with it!

and as for skiing/boarding tomorrow, you will be FINE, just have fun!  i have never snowboarded and i learned to ski when i was four and i am a horrible teacher at it, but just dont try TOO hard, let yourself fall, and have fun!  and regardless of where you are going on the east coast, just know that the conditions SUCK right now, so if it seems hard, it is because is actually IS hard!  have fun!!

Re: steffi

  • Dude, I'm all for the walking spurts when it comes to training. How else are we going to build the endurance? And to be honest, I feel like 3.2 in 34 minutes is good.. that's the best I've done so far too and that was with walking breaks.

To be honest, I don't care what time I finish this 5k as long as I run the whole thing.. oh, I take that back - I do care and am praying that it's at LEAST under 35.

Do you feel like you run faster outdoors/on the track than on the treadmill? I don't know if it's because I have spontaneous control of my pace or what. I hate the treadmill, HATE HATE HATE. I think that's why my runs have been rough lately.

Thanks for the first timer pointers :) I don't know why I'm so nervous - probably because I know I'll make an ass out of myself. When I tried snowboarding it was awful, although I've heard skiing is so much easier. Here's hoping!

  • i think i run "better" outdoors?  like i can say "run to that tree over there" and once i make it to the tree, i see another spot where i tell myself "you made it to the tree, now make it to that sign" and so forth.  in the gym, its just "run for 11 minutes" which is harder, even with a magazine in front of me.

have fun skiing tomorrow, i think it is easier!

  • I'm totally going to butt in here and say, Steff, take a lesson when you go skiing.  Whatever you do.  It makes all the difference in the world.

Also, snowboarding is more difficult (although more fun I think) than skiing, so don't get discouraged.

  • ok, well I wish you the best of luck then.

If by any chance, you get thrown a free class in with rentals or the trip or something, take it anyway, then go join FIL.

I've found that the instructors are trained to spell out a lot of things that other people take for granted. Like detailing out which muscles to emphasize blah blah blah.

Like I said..I'm totally butting in here. Soreee

  • Shauni & Stef, you guys are doing amazing on your training. It's easy to get in a rut, but you really are doing awesome. I do all of my training on a treadmill since I usually work out at 9pm and it's too dark for me to run on the streets. When I race though, it's awesome! I shaved 3 minutes off my best time training when I ran my first 5k.

Also, on learning to ski, I didn't learn until I was 24 since Sam is a super skier (like Shauni). You're going to love skiing. I sucked majorly at snowboarding, but really took to skiing. I think the worst thing to do is start at the bunny slopes. It's like a 10 car pile up, no one has control and they're falling all over the place causing more stress to everyone around them. I learned best going to a longer run and just taking my time getting down. Like Shauni said, let yourself fall, it will happen, many, many times.

And don't look at the 5 year old kids zooming down the hill with no poles, they just make you feel bad.

  • Shauni, you'll always be a great skier to me. That's crazy awesome the Ger is a pro skier.
