Last night's Glee (spoilers)

So I have a few people on my FB who are all up in arms that last night's Glee totally glamorized and encouraged teen drinking.

Anyone agree?  Disagree?

(I hate posting my opinion in the OP...)

  • I'm going to have to read the thread on the Entertainment board (assuming there is one) before I form my final opinion (which is typically influenced by others' opinions).

They didn't get into it over there.

  • I thought it did. I also didn't like that Schu said that he would buy them drinks when they win nationals. I don't do illegal things, period. I'm not up in arms about it though and despite not agreeing with the drinking I thought it was a great episode.

  • Schu said he would buy them sparkling cider... I kind of figured people would be up in arms, but I sort of think that it goes back to the argument that just because it's a show about kids doesn't mean that it's appropriate for kids. Family guy is a cartoon, that doesn't mean kids should watch it. Glee has never been known for having politically correct behavior. I kind of think that people should know that by now and not let their kids watch it if it's a problem.

  • I thought it was a great episode. I don't think it glamorized teen drinking. I barely watched tv as a teen and I drank my fair share and then some. I'm pretty sure at the end when they were all hung over and saying they were done drinking there was a lesson to be learned. Also, didn't Schu say he would bring the sparkling cider?

  • Yeah, I didn't think Schuster meant he would buy them real alcohol either.

ITA.  My sister and I were allowed to watch some "edgy" shows as teens, but my parents always read what the content was before we watched it and I remember sometimes we weren't allowed to watch certain episodes.  Thatseems like a pretty good system.

I thought the episode was the best one in a looooong time (well, other than Sue-icide) and Heather Moore's dancing as "key-dollar sign-ha" was freaking amazing.

And I watched a shitton of TV in high school and didn't drink until college.

  • I assumed the sparkling cider was alcoholic by the kids reactions. Google says it's not, oops. The underage drinking is still illegal, which is wrong in my book, but like I said, it didn't color my opinion of last nights episode.

And that is exactly how a rational person (like you) would react to this. You don't agree with every aspect of the show, you are aware that this is the nature of it, you enjoy it and choose to watch it anyway. I completely get that opinion. I guarantee however, that there are going to be some people that freak the eff out after last night's show.

    Yeah, I saw that.  Lame.

  • I do think they glorified it.  They made it look fun, sexual and exciting with minimal consequences, other than not feeling well and throwing up.  We all know that other consequences exist - because we are rational adults and have likely been there, done that.

For teens the age of the characters portrayed in the show, it likely didn't send a good message.  But really, with Britney's strip tease/boudoir pose/essential nudity, and the sexual/overly sensual/borderline pornographic dance gyrations present in nearly every show, I don't think teens should be watching it anyway.

That said, I still find it entertaining ;)~
