Should I be concern?

Hey girls i don't have anyone close to me to ask so i thought of you girls. I have a muscle that jerks in my back. Its only on the right side middle of back closer to my side. It only jerks ever once in a while and always seems to be the week following my period and only last a few days. Its been going on for over a year now. Its never been to the point to where it prevents sleeping but last night it woke me up twitching.

Does this happen to any of you? I have no insurance so going to the doctor isn't an option right now.

What do u think this could be?

Re: Should I be concern?

  • I don't have a clue, but the muscles under my right eyebrow (not really the eyelid, but above that) will sometimes twitch, seemingly randomly. It's really annoying, but not painful, so I just wait till it stops.

I did a quick google search, and it seems like random muscle twitches are pretty common. Although some sites suggest a lack of magnesium can cause them / cause them to worsen.

Another google search suggested that low magnesium levels can also cause certain PMS symptoms & period problems (since you mentioned the timing after your period).

So... if it's really bothering you maybe try an OTC magnesium supplement and see if it helps?

    Hope that helps!

  • Maybe it's pain somewhere else in your body that you're feeling there.  I know some women have pain or a certain feeling when they ovulate.  If you have a really short cycle it could be that, or maybe a cyst.  It also could just be an irritated muscle or something.  Try some Advil or Aleve for a few days when it happens and see of that helps.  If it gets worse or you're worried I'd go to a health or women's clinic for an exam.  Has it been a long while since you've had a pelvic exam?  It might not be anything gyn related but at least they could rule out something like a cyst.  If it's something else or if they're concerned the clinic can probably refer you to someone or help you arrange for something.  Good luck!

  • Maybe you're straining/overusing that muscle somehow. I have leg muscles that twitch on occasion and that's my theory. Plus, I dunno about you, but periods make my back hurt and tense up.

  • If you are too tense or stressed you can get muscle spasms. They aren't a big deal unless they are caused by a pinched nerve. (That happened to me but I knew it was a problem bc half of my body went numb.)
