Creative Minds come in!

H & I are going to an 80's night tomorrow night.  We need to dress the part, and neither of us can really think of anything that will stand out to wear.  I did this last year and wore a red skirt, leg warmers, purple tights, and a multi-colored paisley shirt, put some 80's style barrettes in my hair and it looked great.  I don't want to wear the same outfit (the tights and leg warmers I don't mind) over again (and I don't think I could fit back in that skirt if I wanted to anyway!) so I'm looking for some suggestions on what to look for.  H also needs some ideas and we're just drawing a blank.  FWIW, we plan on getting whatever we can at the thrift store since its not something we will wear again.  Any ideas would be great.  We don't care if we look silly; that's kinda the point.  TIA!

  • Jelly bracelets. Do you remember those barretts where ribbons were braided around them and then the ribbons would dangle down with a few beads at the end? Those would be some prize-winners in my world.

Shoulder pads. HUGE shoulder pads. A slouch purse if you've got one. If it weren't so cold, I'd say look for some Umbros. Seriously dangling earrings. Bonus points if they're gold with some type of bead on the end or are HUGE hoops.

Denim overalls with something embroidered on the front - and then you have to do the tucked ankle fold to taper them. It's a requirement. In fact - you could probably do this with a pair of jeans you already own, then layer your socks.

  • Thinking back to some of the things I wore in the 80s...

Stirrup pants with long sweaters (now that I think about it, that's kind of back in fashion but with tights instead)

Tiered/fringy skirts--bonus points if you can find it in acid-washed denim

Related to the above: acid-washed jeans with a Coca-cola or Hard Rock Cafe T-shirt (make sure to french-roll your jeans and wear color-coordinated socks and/or converse high-tops)

    Bill Cosby sweaters

Those brown leather Eastland loafers...or the suede-like shoes with the bright orange rubber soles (not sure you can find those anymore!)

If it will work for your hair, do the half-up, half-down bangs thing (click for example)

OMG I forgot that I used to do that to my hair until you posted that link!  I am pretty sure I can still pull that off even w/ my short hair.

I know that Tri County Mall has at least one store that my sister & I went to last year to get some outrageous accessories.  They were all $1 and had really long dangly earrings, plastic bracelets, etc.

I had thought about doing the french cuff on my jeans but its gonna be tricky b/c they are all either boot cut or flare leg and I know its gonna look different than I'm going for.  Ya know come to think of it, I think I have a pair of skinnier leg jeans that I can do that with; they are really dark, though - do you think that will still achieve the look?

Do you remember bunching your socks down??  I remember having the long (almost tube sock like) socks and then bunching them down so they looked like little ruffles.  I think I can use the leg warmers to do that, too.

Great ideas, ladies!  Keep em coming!

  • I don't remember them, but they sure do scream 80s!

  • I went 80s a few years ago for halloween. I got a cheap mens 2xl turtleneck at meijer and chopped off the neck, turning it into a giant off the shoulder scoop neck shirt. Then I tied it at the bottom and wore it with tights and dangly necklaces. Bonus if you have time to add day-glo splatter paint! And you have to do the windex blue eye shadow and bubblegum pink blush and lipstick! Get the wet and wild cheap stuff.

  • If the teased up bangs don't work for you - I have 4 words for you:

    Side-ponytail

    Stacked scrunchies

  • Lots of good ideas for you.  For H, skinny tie, members only jacket, guys even wore headbands (or bandana) arond their head (a'la Olivia Newton John in "Physical")
