AmeriCorps peeps?

I'm curious if there are AmeriCorps members, alums, or supporters here on the boards??

Re: AmeriCorps peeps?

  • My SIL did two "shifts" with them (7 months each) and liked her experience.  She worked at a zoo in Rhode Island.

  • I did two terms as well!  Not sure if your sis knows but there is a bill going through that passed the senate and is going to the house that would entirely eliminate the funding for the organization that oversees AmeriCorps.  Sad  Its been pretty quiet and not a lot of folks know about it so I'm doing my part to get the word out about it.  It would be really sad if it went away.
  • Wow, that's too bad.  The organization I volunteer for has at least 3 AmeriCorps people who play a huge part there.  I'll have to pass this along, or maybe they already know since they're currently in AmeriCorps.

  • Jennyk - if you're not opposed to it, would you consider spreading the word at work?  I think it would help our largely supportive legislators to see that it isn't just about the volunteers - but more importantly it is about the organizations they volunteer for and the services that they provide to those organizations.  We really only have one rep who is anti support National Service (or local tea-party spokeswoman) which rocks but if this passes, it will go into effect THIS YEAR so those AmeriCorps folks serving today could be out of luck.

  • You bet.  I know they rely heavily on the AmeriCorps program and I can't imagine what would happen without them.  I'll email the director and assistant director tomorrow after I have a chance to look at that website, get links to the bills and put a coherent email together.  I'll ask them to pass the info along to their contacts at other organizations who work with the AmeriCorps program, too.  I'm not sure if they will but it's worth a shot.

  • I think this is in the bill Obama said he would veto.  I don?t know if they will have enough votes to override a veto.

We have got to fix the deficient some way; I just hope they can figure out a method that doesn?t cut all these great programs and public jobs.  If it happens, I hope there is a way to give all these people enough transition time before losing their jobs?..in this economy, there might not be such a thing.
